The Coming War with Iran:

It's About the Oil, Stupid

By Joe Lauria

14/04/08 "Huffington Post" -- -- World civilization is based on oil. The world is running out of oil. The oil companies and governments are not telling the truth about how close we are to the end. Dick Cheney knew about peak oil back in 1999 when he spoke to the London Petroleum Institute as Halliburton CEO. He predicted it would come in 2010. After that it's just a matter of years before it runs out. Whoever controls the remaining oil determines who lives and who dies.

Sixty percent of this oil is under a triangular area of the Middle East the size of Kansas. In that speech Cheney said: "The Middle East with two thirds of the world's oil and the lowest cost, is still where the prize ultimately lies."

This small Middle East triangle encompasses the northeast of Saudi Arabia, all of Iraq and the southwestern part of Iran, along with Kuwait, Qatar and the Emirates. The US controls Iraq. It has friendly governments in the other states.

Iran is the exception. The US now surrounds Iran.

1. I agree it's about oil
But not sure about the "peak" coming very soon. Canada is getting oil out of sand in the far north, and they think that there is a huge supply of it that could last for a long, long time. Same thing down here in the states with oil shale. They are developing new ways to get the oil out of the shale, and they say that the supply is also "huge"! When oil was below $50 a barrel, it was not profitable to invest in either process. Now it's "very" profitable, and could be the next big oil boom of this century.

What I think is happening now, is that big oil wants to control it all, and make the largest profits they can. Since it will take 5 to 10 years to develop the other two methods fully, they want to get all they can out of the middle east before that happens. It's all greed, and I don't doubt one bit that they will control the other methods in the future as well! When they control it all they will have the power they seek. Maybe if we get someone in the whitehouse, along with some new people in congress, who want to do what is right for this country, and the world, those who do not cater to the will of big oil money, or corporate money, things will change. I sure hope so.

Now I could be wrong, but his is what I feel it's all about!

2. Not entirely. I don't think Cheney wants them to have civil use nuclear power unless he owns it.
