Congresswoman Michele Bachmann & the Blogosphere by Ken Avidor

This week's cover story in the Saint Croix Valley Press is about Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and the bloggers who have documented her bizarre career.
"Bachmann and the blogosphere" by Jay Stephenson does a pretty good job of explaining why Michele Bachmann has become an internet phenomenon:
Love her or hate her, 6th District Rep. Michele Bach-mann (R-Minn) is one of Minnesota's most controversial political figures. Since her days in the state Senate, the blog world has been lit up on both sides of the spectrum: detractors have referred to her as an extreme right-wing theocrat while defenders say she's a principled conservative who's not afraid to stand her ground.
To date, Bachmann's name pulls up 181,000 results when entered into a search on Google. She's served in Congress for a little over one year. In comparison, the name of Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn), who has been in Congress for more than 33 years, pulls up 164,000 results.
Bachmann has also become a growing celebrity on YouTube with 136 clips posted — more than any other Minnesota representative excluding Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress.
The article goes onto to profile Eva Young, who started the Dump Bachmann blog:
A blog site called "Dump Michele Bachmann," seems to serve as the main battle station for Bachmann critics. The site's chief luminary is Eva Young, an information technologist who resides in Minneapolis.
Young said in an interview that she averages about two hours a day working on the blog and has six regular contributors. The site began in 2004 after Young began frequently posting about Bachmann on her original site, "lloydletta's nooz".
Young didn't think the site would continue after the 2006 election between Bachmann and Democratic-Farmer Labor candidate Patty Wetterling was over. Originally, her main concern about Bachmann was her "focus on gay people."
"I objected to her trying to marginalize people for her political gain," Young says. "And I wanted to post on her extreme rhetoric at the time, that the other mainstream media was not really covering."
Young, who describes her political views as "middle of the road," is not hesitant to refer to Bachmann as a "nut." She believes Bachmann integrates too much religion with politics.
Young says that since her site has followed Bachmann's career from being a state senator to a national congresswomen, it has influenced mainstream media organizations. She says Bachmann now refrains from making comments about gays and religion because of the greater media exposure.
That's for sure. Bachmann lately has been crusading for the freedom to choose lightbulbs instead of the Marriage Amendment issue that energized her base back when she was a state senator. .....(more)
