Georgia Republican instructs House on proper Pledge of Allegiance technique
No pause between 'one nation under god,' lawmaker reminds

A freshman Georgia Republican wanted to stress the importance of divine oversight of the US as he saw it portrayed in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Leading the pledge on the House floor Monday, Rep. Paul Broun lectured others in the chamber about the "correct way" of saying the pledge.

"There should not be a comma between 'one nation' and 'under God,'" Broun told his colleagues before beginning his rendition of a pause-free pledge.

It may seem a minor issue, but some have argued that saying the pledge as Broun prefers -- and as it was written when "under God" was inserted in 1954 -- implies a fealty to religion that is inappropriate in the US.

"Without a comma, the phrase indicates that the central characteristic of the United States as a political community is its subordination to God," wrote history professor Matthew Dennis, after the Supreme Court rejected an attempt to strike "under God" as unconstitutional. "In short, the political community is defined by its religious charge. A pledge that states this becomes, in the words of the 9th Circuit, 'impermissible government endorsement of religion,' functioning to 'enforce a religious orthodoxy of mono- theism.'"

Did he not read his Constitution about separation? What oath of office?

God for votes. It smacks so much of "religious cronyism" when they pander to their god in the people's house.

But we are supposed to be accepting of all views, so I guess the Dems will go along with this.

7. The "religious cronyism" in Congress is just so anti-democratic
and a violation of the oath of office. They pander to the RW churches while we pay for it.

6. Geez, these people never quit
If they're not whining about "Gawd" not being in every little thing, they're whining about how pertinent phrases are spoken.

Sad, sad and pathetic that with this country going to hell in a handbasket, this is what this fool has chosen to support.

on their belts.

We have to remove their tax exempt status. They are getting rich and running candidates for public office. Faith Based charity pads their pockets too. They want a theocracy not a democracy. Clergy are greedy for power and wealth just like in old Europe. It has resulted in the corruption of our churches too.

16. "Gott mit uns" was the Hohenzollern, thus royal Prussian army motto,
and the Wehrmacht wore belt buckles that carried this over in the Nazizeit. The SS had something else on theirs.

8. Badly written from the start. Made worse by pushing "God" into it.
A pledge should be to do something.

If they said, "I pledge to promote liberty and justice for all" that would be an improvement.

Declaring that America already has liberty and justice for all doesn't give the reciter anything to do.

11. I've told our young daughter she needn't recite it in school...
...And have asked several administrative types why young children, who haven't any conception as to the meaning of the words, are expected to mindlessly recite them each and every morning? Never got a sound response on that one.

Cosponsored H.R. 997: To declare English as the official language of the United States

Sponsored bill H.R.4157: To provide that human life shall be deemed to begin with fertilization.

CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES
"For over two decades, I have been a strong advocate of conservative Republican principles. Currently I am ranked as one of the top conservative members of Congress. I am explicitly conservative on fiscal and social issues."

AMERICA'S RELIGIOUS HERITAGE
"America was founded upon the Christian principles contained in the Word of God. We must stop radical judges from legislating from the bench, destroying revered American religious traditions and religious symbols."

..but wait, there's more! (unfortunately):

20. Rep. Paul Broun, MD .. house-call-only physician (practiced medicine w/o a license in 2006).

A board that oversees Georgia doctors fined congressional candidate Paul Broun Jr. $500 last year for practicing without a license.

The Composite State Board of Medical Examiners fined Broun, an Oconee County physician, after he allowed his license to lapse at the end of 2005 and practiced without one until May 28, 2006, according to board of examiners documents. He applied for renewal May 31, 2006.

http://onlineathens.com/stories/053007/news_20070530047.shtml

Broun was elected in a special election last July, 2007, to the USHR seat vacated by the death of popular GOP Congressman Charlie Norwood. My guess is that this "pledge" crap is an attempt to win back some of the base who are pissed at him for some flip-flops.

Letting his medical license expire .. dumb, dumb, dumb. I hope he didn't let his malpractice insurance expire too.
