Wikipedia blacklists the freepers!
Now news or blog action on this, yet, but something I came across this morning and I figured some here would get a kick out of it. Wikipedia articles can no longer use freeperland posts and forums for citations, as they are considered to be an unreliable source. :toast:

20. "This is going to disrupt probably 1000 pages. ..."
Not that I would call this "disruption" or anything close.

The Culture War has disrupted Wiki for years now.
The wingnutters are policing thought online.

They do far more harm "removing" science content and links to science sites than by linking to their trash or adding beliefs!

3. first post I looked at today
Edited on Wed Apr-16-08 08:27 AM by Mabus
Mostly because it was at the top of the "Latest Page". I take it as a good sign and hope the rest of the day goes as well.

This is a good start. I'm trying to imagine a life without the meaningless BS of misguided, self-deluded people. I suppose it will never happen but it so nice that other netizens are giving freepers the recognition they so richly deserve.

18. LOL
If it weren't for our constant exchanges of meaningless BS I don't know what I'd do. Being without you is one thing I don't ever want to imagine. :loveya: (I threw this in because I know how much you love smilies).

fwiw, the Admiral is having oral surgery today. I'm going to get a buttload of meaningless, misguided and self-deluded BS once he gets out of the dentist's office this afternoon. It's going to be an interesting afternoon/evening. I don't know what they give him but I wish I had a video camera to capture his antics. I just hope he doesn't lean out the window and yell "Go Jayhawks" again this time. We're in ACC country and some of them aren't over North Carolina losing yet.

24. He was so funny the other night
He was doing lines from "The Simpsons" and "The Chapelle Show". I must remember not to let him watch certain shows right before he goes to bed. Then again, it does make his sleep talking funnier.

6. Nice, but not as impressive as it might seem
I've been a registered contributor with Wikipedia for a few years now. Blogs have never met the criteria of "reliable source." If news is quoted in a blog or message board -- if, say, I find some information here on DU -- I cannot cite the blog or message board as a source. I must dig down to a primary source, such as a "paper of record" or a wire service.

Reliable source citations have always been a problem with Wikipedia. The discussions you linked came about because Freep references have become so endemic that it will take official action to clean them all out.

7. Don't rain on my parade!
Just kidding. :)

It is mostly because of citations, yea, but some of the discussion did revolve around the nature of freeperland itself. I got a chuckle out of this one;

FR.com mostly posts excerpts, sometimes with commentary interleaved, and always with highly partisan, non-expert commentary following.

8. The entire freeper site wasn't black listed -- just their article reprint section

"FreeRepublic.com is an unreliable source (self-published source) that includes a portion of a site that reprints articles from reliable sources (copyright violations). Most of the reprints actually include links to the reliable source's article, so the only reason they are being included is for traffic. FreeRepublic is itself a notable website, so freerepublic.com itself should be whitelisted, but at a minimum the area for the reprints (www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news) should be blacklisted. --Bobblehead (rants) 02:31, 31 March 2008 (UTC)"

9. Yes it was
What you quoted was just a suggestion, not an implementation. Go to the main filter page, scroll to the bottom;

\bfreerepublic\.com\b

11. that's not a good thing IMHO

If I wanted to write about political forums, then I couldn't link to freeperville if I wrote something about them.

Maybe I don't understand all the issues.

15. Wikipedia doesn't want to be a vehicle to provide traffic to "link spammers"
To prevent this, gratuitous links that just drive traffic to
a spammer's site are routinely edited out of articles (by
human editors). But for eggregious, repeat, violators,
their URLs can be added to a "blacklist". Once that's
done, the Wikimedia software won't allow people to edit
that site's URL(s) into any article.

Free Republic(and its editors of Wikipedia) has apparently
now crossed the threshold so their links are being automat-
ically blocked via the blacklist.

You and I may know that WIKI entries can at times be edited/added to by anyone with a keyboard, but many don't know this.

30. You have only half of the Wikipedia picture
You're correct that Wikipedia articles can (generally) be edited by anyone.

The corollary, though, is that mistakes in Wikipedia articles can be corrected by anyone. In that respect, it's superior to most other sources.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Pick a subject you know something about and review its Wikipedia article. To take one obvious example, here's . Remember that it's a neutral encyclopedia article -- it's not written from the point of view of a confirmed progressive, and it's not supposed to be.

Now, from the perspective of the general reader search the Web and show me a better article about DU. For that matter, show me a better article about Free Republic than .

As it's been said, the trouble with Wikipedia is that it works only in practice. In theory, it can't work. :)

Putting Freeperland in the blacklist just automates the
process of barring spam-links to there.

25. They still have dickipedia.org
Oh wait, they are the living embodiment of http://dickipedia.org/

Check out this sample:

John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is the senior United States Senator from Arizona, the presumptive Republican Party nominee in the 2008 presidential election, an angry old man, and a dick.

In the Republican Party, there are two kinds of dicks: those that support the Iraq War but were too cowardly to fight in a war when they had the chance, and, much less common, those that support the Iraq War and did fight in other wars when they had the chance. McCain is the latter kind of dick.
