Christians hijack Stars-and-Stripes, Statue of Liberty
Why do we allow International Workers Day (May 1st) be turned into a "National Day of Prayer"?

"Proclamations from President George W. Bush and the governors of all 50 states will herald this landmark day, as the fervent prayers of millions of Americans in church events and public venues from coast to coast are offered before the Lord."

HELLO! Whatever happened to the separation of church and state? Freedom of thought? The Age Of Reason? :eyes:

And they have the nerve to illustrate their website with the Stars-and-Stripes and the Statue of Liberty!

As if there was some connection between Christian Fundamentalism and the founding principles of the USA?

Calling all People of Faith here on DU - I am asking you to explain what the heck is going on here!

1. I guess its man selling his holiness to us heathens
Man is a Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion--several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven....The higher animals have no religion. And we are told that they are going to be left out in the Hereafter. I wonder why? It seems questionable taste.

2. It's the continuing theocratization of America.
If we had a REAL labor movement, we'd boycott Labor Day and insist on the date being returned to May 1, in accordance with international labor celebrations.

And the National Day of Prayer is a clear violation of the establishment clause of the first amendment. The arguement that the prayers can be christian or muslim or jewish or buddhist doesn't wash - because it is still giving governmental imprimature to religion over non-religion; it is the government taking a stand that religion is right, non-religion is wrong, and is discriminatory against non-religion.

3. From your name, it looks like you endorse "evil"
I don't believe in God, but I do believe in Good and Evil.

If you want proof that evil exists, just look at Dick Cheney!

4. Being fundamentally opposed to Bushco I am, by their lights,
an evil-doer, and proud of it.

Good and evil are both action and condition - but neither are entities. I don't believe in no ghosts. Evil exists - of that there in no doubt. And it is not merely by mental abberation - some of the most evil people in the world have been clinically sane. And everybody is capable of doing evil, under the right conditions. Truly evil people, however, seek out opportunities to do evil. Just look at Dick Cheney.

5. It's a Violation
It's a violation as is all of the proclamations pushed by the religious right and the pResdient. Many Christians don't agree and protest as much as anyone else by this crap and corruption. There are Christians who like the separation of church and state and understand the founding fathers didn't want a theocracy.
