I bet he had ten pounds of gold hanging off of him in one form or another for the ceremonies today with Bush.

Who is he trying to impress with that?

4. Exactly, we wouldnt understand.
Seems to me though that most Pope's love their bling bling.

Not trying to offend any Catholics, you are in the top 3 in my long search for a religion to follow.

the vow of poverty doesn't mean they have to live in sackcloths under a bridge.

14. Of course.
I'm just pointing out to the OP that there is no 'vow' of poverty that a priest takes during Holy Orders. Nuns do, priests don't.

I believe the vow of Poverty is practiced among all orders.

17. No
many orders, especially monastic ones, have a vow of poverty. Franciscans and Dominicans take a vow of poverty, as do many others.

It simply means they'll share all that they receive.

24. There are many different orders in Catholisism.
Those orders can contain monks, priests and nuns. All three would be subject to the vows of that order.

19. It depends if they belong to a religious order.
Like for instance- a Jesuit Priest would take a vow of poverty as well as 3 additional vows, for a total of 4. Other orders have an additional 3 vows.

26. Okay let me break it down some.
You do not have to belong to an "Order" to become a priest. One third of priests join an "Order". An order also can contain monks and nuns.

If you are a priest who joined an order then you would take the VoP. If you are a priest who did not join an Order then you would not take one.

Q. Is it true that most members of religious Orders make the vow of poverty?

A. Yes it is. Most members of religious Orders take the three vows of chastity, obedience and poverty.

That place is one giant, unbelievable, absurdly hideous bling-bling spot. The amount of wealth the church ferreted away there for ostentatious display is disgusting.

42. Precious miter, conical headgear with two points. Chasuble, low necked top dress
I wonder if the multiple-, layered-dresses style will catch on with American men?

A quick jounalist's guide to Popey style.
-------
Pope: chief of the Roman church.
Popey: dressing like a Roman chief.
Der fanon: two superposed capes sewn at the collar level.
Chasuble: low necked top dress without sleeves.
Sash: long decorative band passed around the neck.
Cassock: long dress attaching with buttons on the front.
Alb: long white dress worn under other clothing.
Tippet: long fabric band doubled and decorated with cross worn around the neck.
Papal ring: big ring made of precious materials.
Precious miter: conical headgear with two points.

Which is which? Go to the visual dictionary: http://www.infovisual.info/06/070_en.html

Google images has some real Popey shots, and it appears that big Precious miter hurts like hell.

43. The Pope wears Prada

Pope Wears Prada, And Italy's Abuzz
Benedict Emerges as Virtual Fashion Celeb

VATICAN CITY -- Whether it's Prada and Gucci, or just fancy ecclesiastical tailoring, Pope Benedict XVI is his own man when it comes to dressing.

Just days before Christmas, Benedict showed up at his weekly public audience in St. Peter's Square wearing a fur-trimmed stocking cap that could have passed for a Santa Claus hat.

Earlier this month, he made another fashion statement -- donning a red velvet cape trimmed in ermine for the traditional papal visit to the statue of the Madonna near the Spanish Steps that marks the beginning of Rome's Christmas season.

Coming after gossip about his wearing Gucci sunglasses and bright red Prada loafers, the vintage styles have turned Benedict into something of a fashion celebrity.

"Those red shoes have made quite an impression," said Vatican historian Alberto Melloni.
