Our rw newspaper published my long ltte...comment?
Our south-central New Mexican county is conservative to the point of being quite right-wing, but (with numerous telephone calls from me) they did publish my long letter to the editor. It was in response to several other long libertarian or Bush-apologist letters. Commenting is easy, no registration. Would love to hear from DU.

Government by itself is not always the problem

Government should not be too big. But if it is too small, it can't protect its citizens from abuses of power. President Theodore Roosevelt said, "The limitation of governmental power means the enslavement of the people by the great corporations." This is happening now.

The libertarian notion that privatizing services traditionally performed by government is unrealistic. In 1992, Dick Cheney, as defense secretary, spearheaded the movement to privatize most of the military's civil logistics activities.

Is anyone surprised that KBR's study concluded that more privatization of logistics was in the government's best interest?

Taxes were paid by my parents' and grandparent's generations both to pay for services provided, and as an investment in our country's future. They sacrificed to give us the best public schools, libraries, legal system, fire departments and protecting agencies at that time. Our parents and grandparents made those sacrifices, expecting us to pass it forward.

3. The usual Bushie blather. As programmed drones, it is as cookie-cutter and similar no matter where
it comes from.

The advantage (to the Bushie Leaders) of possessin the most advanced propaganda delivery system ever know to humankind, 100 times more powerful than anything the Nazis or Soviets could deliver.

4. 91% tax rate for WWII
I really wish we would put that particular tax rate in context, and the reason JFK was able to lower it. Other than that, great letter. Actually, in the 1830's, the world changed the way it approached the poor with the creation of workhouses. The idea was that poverty was because people were lazy and if you made the assistance so horrifically miserable, then they would work and not be poor. Sound familiar? The result was the Irish Famine, for one, and increasing poverty and wealth disparity until the progressive movement. As the poor were dying of starvation in Ireland, crops wer being sold to England and the money was going into the pockets of the British lords. Then we let those who write history revise it, so the poor get suckered all over again.

6. Thank you all
It felt so good to write it out. I'm hoping some of the thoughts come through at those times when I really need it. I usually get so tongue-twisted or angry when I'm in conversations with my neighbors that I thought I need to write more, get those thoughts more clearly in my head. Time will tell if the strategy works!
