Fresno Teen Killed After Hitting Officer With Bat

FRESNO (AP) ― A police officer shot and killed a high school student Wednesday after the teenager attacked the officer with a baseball bat on campus, authorities said.

Police said the officer fired shortly before noon, after a 17-year-old boy at Roosevelt High School allegedly came up behind the officer and hit him in the head with the bat, according to Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer. The officer fell down dazed, grabbed a gun from his ankle holster and fired, Dyer said.

"The officer was fortunate that he was able to defend himself," the chief said.

The cause of the attack was not immediately known. Dyer said there was no history of prior run-ins between the student and the officer, who was employed by the police department as the school's resource officer.

Police did not immediately release the identities of the officer or student, who was described as a longtime Fresno resident who recently transferred to the school. The teenager was 6 feet tall and 250 pounds -- larger than the officer, authorities said.

30. Hey...since when was it ok
to kill a youth who is mentally losing it?
Why? Why not get back up and overwhelm him?

Should we assume it's ok for all of us to kill someone who has a bat swinging at us?

I don't know if I can agree to this response. This is/was the reason police wanted tazers? This was an extremely brutal and stupid reaction on the cops part.

I think you all are confused and have everything a-backwards.

33. Let's see.
He was assaulted with a bat, struck hard enough to knock him to the ground. Using deadly force in this case is not only justified it's appropriate. Striking someone with a bat in the head can and often does result in a fatal injury.

"Since when", you ask? Since FOREVER, that's when.
Since the very idea of "Law" was invented.

That's how long "laws" have recognized the right
to use deadly force against an attacker who is
attempting to MURDER you.

45. When seconds count, help is only minutes away
Even with a 10-13 call.

Seriously, how long does it take to kill somebody with a baseball bat when surprise is on your side? Three, four seconds? Maybe two full-power swings after you've knocked him to the ground? Just crush the skull or snap the neck vertebrae.

Also, pistol wounds are not immediately incapacitating unless they hit the brain or spinal cord. Even with a couple of rounds in the chest, a sufficiently enraged attacker can small your skull in before subcuming to blood loss.

Forget what you see on TV. Most the immediate impact from handgun wounds in psychological in nature. Panic, fear, and survival instincts kicking in. It takes a minimum of 15 seconds or so to pass out from blood loss.

At 6' and 250LB, he was either a heavyweight boxer... or Fat Albert's offspring. The cop wouldn't have much time to think, especially if the teen was a boxer.

A baseball bat is a deadly weapon. You actually haul off and use one on a cop who has his back turned to you, you deserve to get shot and killed.

21. And where did I say otherwise?
You seem to be itching for an argument. No surprise in that I suppose, this is the internet after all.

My point is that there is no reason whatever given for this young man to have attacked a police officer out of the blue. Such things do happen of course, but far more often there is more to the story than that. What that might be I have no idea. Perhaps the student had a beef that we are not aware of, perhaps there was an altercation immediately preceding the bat attack which has not been reported. Perhaps any number of things, but the least likely scenario for me is that this young man woke up today and decided to randomly attack someone with a bat.

We shall see.

if the cop had gone postal and was shooting up the school for no reason. But we would have heard about it, if that were the case.

This kid was some sort of miscreant who did something he should have known would get him killed outright.

12. "I think this wasn't enough for him to kill the kid," (from the article)
Maybe. But when you hit someone on the head with a baseball bat, ya know, you're kind of saying "I'm trying to kill you."

And when you've received that blow to the head there's probably little else you can think of other than "He's trying to kill me." And if you have a gun, you're probably gonna shoot who hit ya. Especially if you've been hit hard enough to go into survival mode, which he probably was.

Assaulting a cop with a loaded gun and not expecting to get shot is like running out into the middle of a highway and expecting not to get hit by a car.

23. I wonder what was going through the kids head.
Seriously, what was his goal? Was it suicide by cop? The kid couldn't expect to attack a cop without serious repercussions, maybe he didn't expect a lethal response? Maybe he was "trying to make a name for himself"? The new kid who "kicked a cops ass" in school? Why did the kid suicide himself like that?

I guess its a sign of our society collapsing to even NEED police officers in our public schools, have we declined that far in the past twenty years? What is wrong with the kids?

Police: Fresno Student Killed By Cop Wanted To Die

FRESNO (AP) ― Relatives of a Fresno high school student who was shot to death after he attacked a police officer with a baseball bat questioned the department's version of events Thursday, and said the depressed teenager never received the help he needed from teachers and school administrators.

Jesus "Jesse" Carrizales, a 17-year-old sophomore, died Wednesday of a single bullet to the chest, fired by a school resources officer, Junus Perry, whom Carrizales had ambushed on a ramp outside his office. The first officers to reach the scene also found a small butcher knife protruding from Carrizales' pocket, authorities said.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Thursday that the 6-foot-tall, 250-pound teen sought out the violent confrontation, which he called "a case of suicide by cop."

Police said there were no prior clashes between Carrizales and Perry, who spent the past three years assigned to Roosevelt High School by the police department.

But it wasn't the first time Carrizales had a run-in with police. In 2005, while in middle school, the student was cited for concealing a small knife in his backpack, Dyer said. Relatives said the knife belonged to a friend.

41. I'm sure carrying a bat around during the day would have been permitted when I was in high school
But it would have to be a personally owned one. The school's sports equipment was always checked out when needed for sanctioned activities like P.E. class, and checked back in when we were finished with it.

31. A bat could easily kill someone with one blow.
Hell, in Lakewood Ohio, a 30 year old man died in his sleep as a result of a drunk punching him in the back of the head . . . ONCE. The haymaker wild punch, which likely packed way less force than a swung object such as a bat, fractured the back of the victim's skull and he bled to death slowly, dying during the evening.

If swung a little higher in the wrong place, that bat could have killed that officer. A bat is assault with a deadly weapon.

So yes, good work in dropping that coital mistake before he could have killed someone else with his thuggery bullshit.

And if a police officer swings a baton to the head, it is considered deadly force, just like shooting someone with a gun.

You got a permit for that bat?

By the way, and dead seriously: It's illegal in California to carry a baseball bat within the enclosed passenger compartment of a vehicle. You have to put it in the trunk. I have no clue what SUV and Minivan drivers are supposed to do. I remember getting warned way back when I was in high school and got pulled over. The cop made me put it in my trunk, and warned me that a baseball bat inside a vehicle is considered a weapon AND is grounds for arrest in this state.

Yep, it's California after all. :)
