Alessandro Portelli was surprised to find that witnesses memories of the event (25 years after the fact) were consistently at odds with the indisputable facts of the case in ways which were inconsistent with simple explanations of time and memory loss.

He built a strong case that the way in which people remembered the event, counter-factual though their accounts were, gave him much greater insight into the meaning and significance of the event than he ever would have found by a factual accounting from the records.
