3. Rushing him to the hospital probably woudn't have helped |

When a brain aneurysm starts leaking, 50% of patients die outside the hospital. Another 25% die on the operating table. Another 20% survive but are so severely handicapped they will never live away from institutional care.
Only 5% manage to survive with any quality of life, and even then they have serious deficits.
Most aneurysms are congenital and most of them burst, rather than leak. The poor little guy really didn't have a chance.
I hope somebody is there to support his mom. She's going to need to have people around her to take care of her.

10. When I was 11 years old, my dad's best friend died from an aneurysm. |
|
It was the first time I ever saw my dad cry. I will never forget it.
It was a Sunday night. They had spent the day together. Then at midnight, our phone rang and he was dead. He was only 44.

13. That's how quick it is |
|
It's actually pretty merciful. The person has the worst headache of his life, projectile vomits once, and is dead before he hits the ground.
That doesn't make it any easier for the people left behind, though.

I've heard some awful stories lately. A child in one of my kid's classes just had a stroke -- at age 11. It will take months of rehabilitation.

6. My cousin's 7 year old died of one a year ago |
|
He is a college professor. They took her to the hospital immediately, the local (Minot) hospital had her airlifted to (?) regional trauma center. In the end her organs were donated w/in 20 hours of the 1st symptoms...the funeral was beyond sad.
A brain aneurysm is a rare and horrifyingly sudden event.
Jenna was a sweet kid.... her parents did EVERYTHING they could.
I doubt the mothers (illegal immigrant) fear made much of a difference.

11. It happened to a friend of mine in college. |
|
In the middle of a political activist group meeting, which she was facilitating. About 40 people witnessed it, including her roommate and her boyfriend (and me).
20 years old, athletic, vegetarian, didn't smoke or drink...but it was congenital, it turned out. She never regained consciousness. She was on life support for a few days until her family decided to let her go.
It was so devastating to the whole school, it was such an awful shock.

We lost a little girl to a burst appendix. Same deal - got sick and Mom didn't take her to the doctor. About 10 years ago. It was so incredibly sad.

Almost no one and nothing would have caught that. And an aneurism is so fast and fatal...I don't know he could have been saved...I worked as an EMT and in a 12 year old that would be almost unheard of...Rest easy friend-I doubt they could have recognized it in time.
