Peggy Noonan: First Lady Should Seem “Slightly Drugged”; McArdle: Obama Too Skinny
By: Blue Texan Friday April 18, 2008 10:30 am

I know this isn't exactly a newsflash, but conservatives really have weird, deep-seated issues with gender. While considering Obama's elitism today in the WSJ, Nooner just can't help herself and goes after Michelle Obama.

The other is elitism, a charge that clearly grates on him (Obama) and unnerves his wife, who has a great deal that would be attractive in a first lady (intelligence, accomplishment, beauty) but lacks placidity, which is, actually, necessary. All first ladies, first spouses, should be like Denis Thatcher, slightly dazed, mildly inscrutable, utterly supportive. It is the only job in the world where "seems slightly drugged" is a positive job qualification.

In other words, Nooner wants her first ladies to be mindless Stepford Wife zombies on GHB. Kinda like her.

She Must LOVE Laura!

3. The first spouse, particularly if a female should work. Set an example for young women
Let them see that she is providing for herself, and that whatever role her husband has does not relieve her of that responsibility as an adult.

13. unfortunately
they all act like it was them who got elected to something, and proceed along their own agendas courtesy of the public treasury.

6. Why shouldn't Laura look slightly drugged?
The Frat Boy has looked slightly drugged for years.

Otherwise, when Ms. Noonan says she wants a "placid" First Lady, she is speaking for herself. Definitely not me.

We'll assign Staphanopoulos and Gibson to ask her questions about this.

8. Jesus, this lady frightens me, but I don't think the first lady should be like Hillary either
because we elected a president not his or her spouse. I think a first lady should be more like Elanor Roosevelt than Laura "Pickles" Bush.

10. I think that's the only way I'd be able to cope with the job
which is unpaid, unsought after, and a lightning rod for criticism of every minor mannerism, change of dress, hairstyle, makeup, and every other trivial thing a shallow, tabloid obsessed public can come up with the scream about so they won't have to focus on real problems.

I'd need six months at the Betty Ford Clinic once my husband left the job.

15. You know, I have always felt that Noonan is half in the bag when she goes on a talk show.
I really believe this lady drinks during the day. She always has a little buzzy look about her. When Bill Buckley died she went on GMA and looked and sounded like she'd just had her first belt of the day in the green room. I wouldn't be surprised if she goes into rehab one of the days after falling on her ass in public or wrecking her car while under the influence...

18. Really? Has she actually talked about taking Valium?
That would account for her woozy style, I guess.

14. I do think that the first lady/gentleman should be in the background.
It's the leader's job to be the leader.

In Washington, I think that Mike Gregoire is a good model for that role.

And yes, I am aware that it is unlikely that Bill could serve Mike Gregoire's role in that way.
