11. I don't like it either, but the gas station guy isn't getting rich on it
Just to make the math easy:
You buy a week's worth of gas for $1000. You sell it to your customers for $1100. You make $100. The price charged by the distributor goes up that week by $200, so the next tank will cost you $1200. That takes all your profit and some of your capital to buy the next week's supplies. You might be able to charge more this week to make up for next week and stay in business. I can kind of understand it. The villians in the story are not your neighborhood gas station owners, they are the big oil companies that made obscene profits last year and are continuing on the same path, unchecked, now. With tax breaks, God help us!

13. Remember when Bush was surprised "I hadn't heard that" about gas
PROBABLY going to $4/gal? Seems just like a few weeks ago. Wonder how stunned he'll be when he's told it's up to $5.

6. the prices have to get raised at some point.
they can't change the price at the pump before they change the sign, and most stations still have the signs that have to be changed manually.
i was at a gas station once when they were changing the price while i was there, but i started pumping before it changed and got the lower price.

12. I know the West Coast is INSANE.
By best friend lives in LA, and my brother in Seattle. My heart goes out to you all!

Here in Clayton, many people commute to Raleigh to work. We have no public transportation system -- we don't even have sidewalks! I don't know how they're going to mange.

I don't know how ANY of us are going to manage for much longer, and not just with the gas prices -- with everything!

I did not not know that.

Not even close.

And anyway, I'm sure the people in the suburbs ARE concerned, too.

And I can't imagine why anyone would be concerned about their inability to get it.

NEVERMIND, I could have sworn there was a typo in your post when I read it earlier.

I guess I was wrong.

Ooops.

Editing again, there is a typo in your post. I apologize for my earlier apology.

I honestly wasn't questioning you if that's what you think.

Would it make you feel better if I went back and changed it? It certainly seems like it is bugging you or something.

EDIT -- Just for you, I tried to edit it, but my time has expired. So I'll have to live in shame, I guess.

25. Who can resist mocking a typo on a Friday evening?
And of course I waited until the time for editing expired before I pointed it out.

Do I look like I fell off the turnip truck?

On a more serious note here's what I don't get. I'm not familiar with Raleigh geography but Mapquest says it's less than 15 miles from Raleigh to Clayton.

Seems to me that's very doable on a bicycle. Maybe the roads aren't bike "friendly" but a wise man once said: "Sometimes you gotta say: What the fuck." It's time to take matters into your own hands when it becomes painfully obvious that no one is going to come to your aid.

If there's no lifeboat just take the plunge and hope that you're a really good swimmer.

At least you'll go down fighting.

YMMV of course.

28. Realistically not doable.
There are primarily highways between here and Raleigh -- and actually most people work in RTP (Research Triangle Park) which is beyond Raleigh.

It would be a LONG bike ride on the back roads.

It shouldn't have come to this -- they at least could have considered a transit system of some sort.

27. And you sanctimonious bicycle riding
types are weird your own pathetic little ways as well...

Why is it that when people want to vent a little about being played by the oil companies and futures traders, you have to come in each and every time (not to mention your pathetic posts about "who should suffer") with your "holier than thou" attitude and condemn those that have not embraced your pathetic little lifestyle?

31. When people get the message I'll stop posting about it
Every day I see hundreds of people using cars for trips that could be easily done on a bicycle.

Ordinarily I'm a live and let live kind of guy except:

Excessive automobile usage does terrible things to the environment and causes oil wars.

It has an impact on me personally. I have to breath toxic fumes and dodge cars when I'm trying to get to and from work.

Sooooooooo, after I do that I feel like venting.

And what better place to vent than a thread about automobile usage?

I realize that it's highly unlikely someone will change their behavior because of something I post but venting feels good.

Right?
