Leila Fadel: News From Sadr City
As the war in Iraq moves further into its fifth year, bombings and shootings continue — especially in Sadr City. Among the journalists on the ground in that conflicted area is Leila Fadel, the Baghdad bureau chief for McClatchy Company. Fadel spoke with Bill Moyers when she was in New York to receive the George Polk Award for Foreign Reporting.
Fadel's work is not only featured in the 30 McClatchy newspapers around the country, but in her blog, Baghdad Observer. In her April 2, 2008 blog posting Fadel acknowledged a critique by a military friend about her recent article on the civilian casualties of U.S. operations in the area. Fadel noted the complexity of the situation faced by Iraqis and U.S. forces alike, as well as reporters on the ground:
The point of the piece today was to show the general anger and sadness felt in Sadr City. Today our bureau will tell another story and tomorrow another. Everyone of them will anger someone, everyone will shine a light on a different struggle in this war.
