Late Tuesday afternoon, U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens announced his first quarter fundraising results. The incumbent collected almost $585,000 over the three month period.
Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, who has formed an exploratory committee to challenge Stevens, claims he has raised $250,000. Begich, a Democrat, still has not decided whether or not he will challenge Stevens for the seat.

The Republican incumbent received $438,000 from individual donors, according to records filed with the Federal Election Commission. Stevens received an additional $146,000 in contributions from political action committees.
Stevens spent $317,000 on his campaign in the first quarter, leaving $1.3 million in his campaign war chest — an increase of $261,000 over the cash-on-hand he had at the close of 2007.
In a statement released Tuesday, Stevens said the contributions from more than 900 donors show there’s a “strong message of support” for his candidacy.
