I have a mower with a 5 gallon gas tank. I fill it from a 5 gallon can.

Gas here hit $3.55 today.

Do the math.

I remember cruising town in a 64 Comet Cyclone with a 289 and a 4 speed. Fast. Usta cost a buck for the night. We usta chip in. A quarter each. We were bad. Four bad boy greasers in a hot rod. All night. For a buck.

Now my fucking mower wants almost twenty times that.

33. That sounds like Drexel black humor
I remember reading of a Drexel trader who was indicted, then fired, for making $23 million in illegal profits off 17 inside trades. The real reason he was fired was for violating securities laws, but the joke running around Drexel was that Milken fired him because anyone who had to do seventeen trades to make $23 million couldn't be any good.

Apart from 'conventional pets'.

Just a few miles further out and we could keep horsies.

Or goats.

Or sheep.

Maybe even piranhas.

9. get a push mower that doesn't use gas?
i'm considering getting one. but i was thinking about getting it for "environmental" reasons--lately, with gas over 3.60 (i saw 3.75 & 3.85 tonight) i'm thinking it might come in handy for pocketbook reasons as well.

17. This only sounds flip...
Edited on Sat Apr-19-08 12:12 AM by realpolitik
Eventually getting a horse solves both problems. I used to stake my horse out on the lawn in a different spot every couple of days. My SO's parents used goats.

and while a goat can actually pull a cart, a horse is far better. Either one is ok with a 10% grade. Buy a Morgan colt or filly, and break it to a single shear plow... now you are a pre-post oil farmer.

I know it sounds like I am making a joke. But who knows, at some point it may make sense.

Here is another solution!

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/09/the_cutting_edg.php

use a mountain bike for low gearing...

Preliminary data regarding oil production through December 2007 is now available from the US Energy Information Administration, so it is a good time to put together an updated summary of where we are now with respect to peak oil. The major themes of this presentation are

• The US oil story
• The world oil story
• Five myths

Ain't them "thousand points O' light" purdy?

$3.65 here in West Bye Gawd Virginia...I'm getting me one of them "Pet Goats" ASAP!

Edit...I had a 64 Comet and my Dad had another one that he bought brand new. I think it cost about $6.00 or $7.00 to fill them up when I was driving mine.

24. If you don't have a very big lawn, get an electric lawn mower.
That's what I use. I live in town only about .25 acre. I plug the thing in to outlets in my house or garage. It kind of feels like your vacuuming outside.

26. If his mower has a 5 gallon tank my guess he is cutting over an acre
I have a 2 1/2 gallon tank on my mower for about 2/3 of an acre.

And there are no CAFE standards for lawn mowers so they really suck it up.

30. Mine is a 1976 Gravely 812
Strong Like Bull

These were made when "American built" was a sign of quality. I have paid less than $500 in repairs since I owned it. A couple of new clutches, lots of new blades, oil changes, routine maintenance. It plows snow in the winter and cuts grass in the summer. It moves full size trailers around. A few years back, with tire chains, it went out in a snowstorm and fetched a stuck car home.

It sucks gas and probably pollutes like crazy. But I honestly believe it will run for at least 50 years (it is 32 years old now).
