The one positive thing to come out of the pologomy sect mess |
|
Haven't heard any of the "religion industry" shouting out about "protecting traditional marriage" lately.
As one who's the subject of all those fundraising emails - it's a nice little break. Like working near some heavy, noisy equipment that constantly runs - then suddenly goes silent when you've just accepted it as annoying background noise.
Sadly, I'm sure it'll start up again soon enough.

against polygamy, again?
If a man has more than one wife, is that really anyone else's business, any more than if he wants to pull his own teeth out with a pair of rusty pliers? What's the difference?

2. It is a problem if young girls are forced against their will into marriages to old men |

And young boys are tossed out onto the streets to lessen the competition for wives. And that's what was happening in this group.

4. Every form of polygamy practiced today involves the subjugation of women. |
|
Women stoned for not wearing burkas, girls left uneducated, women not allowed to drive, 8 to 12 year old girls forced into sex, grown women without property rights and on and on and on...
Seems to me there is something intrinsically bad about polygamy if it leads to women being turned into property, sex objects and marinates under the control of men.

it's the culture of economic dependence.
I personally know a Islamic family from Singapore, now living in the US because of business. There are 2 wives in this family. Both are very well educated professionals and have the same basic freedoms I have. One of the wives chooses to wear the headscarf and the other never did. The husband is kind attentive and loving, both from what I see and from what the wives and children tell me.
I'll grant you it rarely works out this well. But clearly, it's not the polygamy that causes the problem. It's the culture practicing polygamy that's the problem.

5. The system can't be sustained without a cost to women and children. |
|
But if you don't care about women and children, and think that men should be allowed to hurt them for their own gratification, then that won't bother you at all.
