Sect has kicked out some 2,000 teen boys

Forced marriages. Underage sex. Teenage mothers.

That is the portrait emerging of the hundreds of girls who have been removed by the state from a polygamist sect's compound that is at the center of one of the largest child welfare investigations in American history.

But what about the boys who are among the 416 children taken from the YFZ (Yearning For Zion) Ranch?

There are believed to be far more girls than boys among the children in custody. And the Texas boys are thought to have escaped the hardships common in other Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints communities, where boys are routinely expelled.

14. It's a sex farm
used to raise female breeding stock.

That's why they separated children from their mothers at an early age and warehoused them in dormitories. It's why boys were dumped along the road when they started to notice girls. It's why those women were kept in a perpetual state of childhood.

27. in a herd, the bull (dominant male) always weeds out male rivals
before they become a threat.

they may let the beta males (their trusted lieutenants) get a little second-class sex, but they pretty much get rid of the adolescent males.

3. Forced population expansion seems like a real question here.
If numerous teenage females are having many children, is someone plotting to increase their power by reproducion? Not to mention the number of potential child brides in the community.

5. From the article:
"Many of these boys come from good families. But their fathers know that if they don't put their child out on the street, his entire family will be put out on the street," said Shannon Price, director of the Diversity Foundation in Salt Lake City that helps victims abused by the polygamy faith.

The FLDS has traditionally kept the number of boys in their polygamist communities low. That way the male leaders can have their pick of young "plural wives," without the worry of younger competition, said Brenda Jensen, a former "polygamy kid" who now works as a volunteer for The Hope Organization. The nonprofit group in St. George, Utah, helps abuse victims from polygamist relationships.

and

With the boys gone, the girls, fresh from graduating, are married off to "these old grizzly men," Jensen said.

"Usually, your graduation dress becomes your wedding dress," she added. "Those were the lucky ones. Some would just get tapped on the shoulder, pulled into a room and come out married."

8. These boys are completely naive about the outside world
No real schooling, no contact with the world via tv or radio--dumped on the streets for "infractions" like rolling up their sleeves or talking to girls--cut off from the only life they know. Thank goodness for rescue societies made up of kids who went through the same hell. Only wish there were more groups like them to help.

15. They need to be sure to look at the numbers of little boys
Edited on Sun Apr-20-08 12:12 PM by kestrel91316
(prepubescent) relative to little girls, also. If they aren't close to 50:50, SOMEBODY has some serious explaining to do, and somebody needs to dig up Babyland and do a boy:girl count there, too.

Has anybody else done any serious thinking about why they would be telling the girls that a birth ratio of 2 girls to 1 boy is normal???????????

I have a VERY VERY unsettling feeling about how they deal with some of the male infants. Raising them up to puberty has got be a serious drain on resources for them. Think about what many dairy goat producers do with their excess males. Many will just knock them on the head rather than raise them. They can't recoup the costs of feeding them 'til slaughter.

The early Mormons thought nothing of killing people who got in the way of their plans - I know. I am descended from one of their most notorious killers. FLDS considers themselves the only true Mormons, because they never gave up the doctrine of polygamy like those "apostates" did in 1890. Did they also not give up the doctrine of blood atonement and the dirty little secret of convenience killing???

I know this sounds awful. I'm just trying to get inside these people's heads and I REALLY don't like where the math goes..........

17. A lot of unsubstantiated claims in this article.
It cites a pair of "survivors" and a private dick working for the "survivors" as sources.

Where are the numbers from Arizona and Utah welfare workers or cops?

Where are all these "lost boys"?

This is just shoddy reporting. Relying solely on the accounts of the sect's avowed enemies is like relying on the Miami Cubans to tell us about life under Castro or relying on Sean Hannity to tell us about Obama.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Even though he was abandoned by his family after his church leader excommunicated him for wanting to go to public school, a former member of a polygamist sect on Saturday asked that people not condemn his father. "The fathers are not always the bad guys. They, too, are being persecuted by the prophet," said Richard Gilbert, who was in Salt Lake City to speak on behalf of some 400 boys and young men pushed out of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ. The prophet is Warren Jeffs, who reportedly has banished hundreds of men and boys from the twin border cities of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona, in a struggle for control over the sect , whose estimated 6,000 to 12,000 members make it the largest polygamous group in the West. Gilbert and about 50 other boys appeared at a Capitol news briefing to help announce the efforts of the nonprofit group Diversity, a mentoring group seeking donations and sponsors the hundreds of youths abandoned by their families. Gilbert said he was excommunicated at age 16 after saying he wanted to attend public school. In July 2000, Jeffs, told followers to stop associating with apostates and outsiders and pull their children from public schools. "This is really happening in the United States," he said. "There's a lot that goes on that people need to see and help with."

The Lost Boys

They are just young men (mostly young teenagers) who have become competition to the older men who want more (and usually much younger) wives. They are kicked out of their homes and run out of town. They often leave with just the shirts on their backs. Most have minimum education and few life-skills. But, the Prophet said that they must go away. So their parents cast them out like unwanted pets. Now, they are out on the street trying to fend for themselves. They are known as the "Lost Boys".

More than 400 teenage boys are wandering the streets of southern Utah ... with no where to go ... and no where to call home. They're called the "Lost Boys" ...
Utah's Attorney General says they've been forced out of their polygamist homes in the community of Colorado City, Arizona ... and Hilldale, Utah. Kimberly Houk joins us from the State Capitol with more. More than 1 hundred of the "Lost Boys" filled the Capitol's steps earlier this afternoon. They were there asking for help ... and wanting to tell their story. And it's a sad story ... filled with intimate details of what it's like to be a young boy living in the polygamist colony controlled by FLDS prophet Warren Jeffs. "FISCHER: ON A MONTHLY BASIS MULTIPLE FAMILIES ARE BEING DESTROYED. CHILDREN WAKE UP FINDING THEY HAVE A NEW DADDY FINDING THAT THEY HAVE NEW BROTHERS AND SISTERS."

20. Mormon sects have been practicing polygamy for 170 years
in this country, there could be as many as 50,000 people practicing some sort of mormon plural marriage lifestyle. Should we persecute all of them, take away all of their children, lock them all up?

FLDS has somewhere between 6000 and 8000 members. Lock 'em all up?

21. I'm glad the facts about the FLDS are coming out
too late for thousands who have suffered at the hands of the Jeffs, but hopefully future generations won't be subject to rape, abuse and worse.

It's amazing to me that this is allowed to go on in this country under the nose of law enforcement.
