Priests fight at Jesus' tomb
Christians clash at Jesus' tomb on Orthodox Palm Sunday
By SARAH EL DEEB | Associated Press Writer
1:49 PM CDT, April 20, 2008

JERUSALEM - Dozens of Greek and Armenian priests and worshippers exchanged blows at one of Christianity's holiest shrines on Orthodox Palm Sunday, and used palm fronds to pummel police who tried to break up the brawl.

The fight came amid growing rivalry over religious rights at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, built over the site in Jerusalem where tradition says Jesus was buried and resurrected.

It erupted when Armenian clergy kicked out a Greek priest from their midst, pushed him to the ground and kicked him, according to witnesses.

When police intervened, some worshippers hit them with the palm fronds they were holding for the religious holiday. The Eastern Orthodox churches, including the Armenians and Greek Orthodox, follow a different calendar from Western Christians and celebrate Easter next Sunday.

13. I can't look down my long blue Buddhist nose at this one
because there was a story a year or so ago about Buddhist monks from different monasteries representing different sects in Thailand getting into a physical altercation as they passed each other in the street.

Violence over nothing isn't limited to religion. It infects differing philosophical opinions, too, as well as something as banal as rooting for different corporate sports teams.

The monks, however, were disrobed and sent packing from their respective monasteries.

I doubt anything will happen to the priests.

39. My bad - but they got into it a few months ago- see below
I guess I was remembering this incident which was near Christmas and in Bethlehem with the one following in Jerusalem. Both incidents involving Armenian and Greeks.

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) 12/28/2007 -- Greek Orthodox and Armenian priests attacked each other with brooms and stones inside the Church of the Nativity as long-standing rivalries erupted in violence during holiday cleaning on Thursday.

The clean-up turned ugly after some of the Orthodox faithful stepped inside the Armenian church's section.

The basilica, built over the grotto in Bethlehem where Christians believe Jesus was born, is administered jointly by Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic authorities.

JERUSALEM-04/20/2008: Dozens of Greek and Armenian priests and worshippers exchanged blows in Christianity's holiest shrine on Palm Sunday, and pummeled police with palm fronds when they tried to break up the brawl.

A long time ago they claimed thehe Ethopians papers of twere contaminated with the plague, so they burned the papers and then locked them out. So the men had to move to the roof.

Edited on Mon Apr-21-08 12:47 AM by pokerfan
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump. I ran over and said: "Stop. Don't do it."

"Why shouldn't I?" he asked.

"Well, there's so much to live for!"

"Like what?"

"Are you religious?"

He said, "Yes."

I said, "Me too. Are you Christian or Buddhist?"

"Christian."

"Me too. Are you Catholic or Protestant?"

"Protestant."

"Me too. Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?"

"Baptist."

"Wow. Me too. Are you Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord?"

"Baptist Church of God."

"Me too. Are you original Baptist Church of God, or are you Reformed Baptist Church of God?"

"Reformed Baptist Church of God."

"Me too. Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915?"

He said: "Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915."

I said: "Die, heretic scum," and pushed him off.
