Torture victim's records lost at Guantánamo, admits camp general·
No evidence of al-Qaida suspect's interrogation

The former head of interrogations at Guantánamo Bay found that records of an al-Qaida suspect tortured at the prison camp were mysteriously lost by the US military, according to a new book by one of Britain's top human rights lawyers.

Retired general Michael Dunlavey, who supervised Guantánamo for eight months in 2002, tried to locate records on Mohammed al-Qahtani, accused by the US of plotting the 9/11 attacks, but found they had disappeared.

The records on al-Qahtani, who was interrogated for 48 days - "were backed up ... after I left, there was a snafu and all was lost", Dunlavey told Philippe Sands QC, who reports the conversation in his book Torture Team, previewed last week by the Guardian. Snafu stands for Situation Normal: All Fucked Up.

Saudi-born al-Qahtani was sexually taunted, forced to perform dog tricks and given enemas at Guantánamo.

2. I'm sure it's just an odd coincidence that these records have just
vanished. Poof, they're gone.

"Mob activity? Murder? ME? Why, that's impossible -- I was in Miami at the time."

Also, as almost anyone who can read can clearly see, Gauntanamo is a U.S-run torture chamber. It is a site dedicated to abject injustice and cruelty.

The United States cannot on one hand promote "democracy" and "peace" while on the other sexually taunt, torture, and humiliate human beings.

Of the thousands of things to object to about the Bush/Cheney years, I think the Yoo/Gonzalez pro-torture tilt is the most virulent and ultimately the most damaging to our national reputation. These men -- Yoo and Gonzalez -- plus Rice et al -- were raised to know better. They abandoned elemental dignities which should be accorded to all human beings.

All of these *losses*, from the Military and from the WH. We need to do some REAL slapdowns on anyone who had ANYTHING to do with the records. How about a dishonorable discharge and THEN a trial for treason?

This shit is happening BECAUSE these characters know their will be no personal repercussions to anyone, thanks to our spineless Congress.

How about turning that around and start charging the characters involved (ANYONE who had anything to do with the files) with some SERIOUS blowback -- if only to get THEM to think twice before they *look the other way* and files are disappeared?
