Did anyone watch the final show in the "John Adams" series?
I watched it last night and all I can say is wow! I literally cried. This show should really rack up the awards. The actors were sensational and the show was short of perfection.:applause:

If they would have taught history like this when I was in school, I might have retained things better:eyes:

Awesome series!

1. Paul Giamatti is finally getting his due
I love it when an actor who didn't fall off the "pretty boat" makes good.

2. I watched some of it, to know how many great men during that
time worked on honesty, truth and toiled over this country, and sacrificed blood to acquire a republic, and now we have thrown that all away. We used to be a great nation, or am I dreaming.

4. It was an excellent miniseries, and yes, lots of tears shed here watching the last
episode. Both Giamani and Linney deserve best acting emmys.

My favorite scene was when John saw the painting celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and how he said the true history behind the revolution was already gone.

5. We haven't seen the last episode yet
but have enjoyed the series so much that my husband is now reading 1776 and will read John Adams next. The whole production is amazing and the actors were fantastic. I agree that this series will dominate the Emmies!

6. Haven't seen it yet. Maybe tonight.
The first six episodes have been kind of boring.

Why do I think this is a propaganda film aimed for the Iraqi citizen?

The George Washington guy plays the part of a dishonest crook in most of the films he's in.

our schools would obviously be recieving much better funding and everything would be better! LOL

It was a wonderful series. I enjoyed the costuming and sets as much as anything else.

9. Yeah, it was amazing
It kind of got me on a Founding Fathers kick. I just finished a Jefferson Bio and I intend to read Founding Brothers next. Giamatti was outstanding and it gave John Adams the credit he was due. His administration was considered a failure, but he was much more concerned with doing right for the country than his own popularity. His entire term as president he just got hit from both side of the political aisle, with the Hamiltonians pressing him to declare war on France on one side and the Jeffersonian hammering him from the other. Takes a very strong man to withstand that and stay true to his principles.
Laura Linney was also amazing as Abigail. Her and Paul have every TV award for next year locked up.

14. exactly. I was watching the "making of John Adams" one night
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 09:06 AM by Blue_Roses
and the author of the book said he started out writing about Jefferson, but found Adams to be much more interesting, especially with the many letters he and Abigail wrote to one another.

Adams seemed like a man of principle and unfortunately, men like that don't reap the fruit of their labor until years later--after they've died.

and btw welcome to DU:hi:

23. Well, perhaps a more apt analogy would be that Hamilton was the Cheney
to Adams' Dubya Bush - Hamilton represented the hard-right extreme of the Federalists while Adams tried to put a nicer face on it. The Federalists always distrusted the idea of real power in the hands of the people, and essentially appeased them by giving them a little bit. This is how the original legislative system of voting for House of Representatives only by popular vote, while the Senators were appointed by various methods, depending on the state. The real power remained in the hands of the Senate, giving America a "House of Lords" in effect. This went unchanged until 1913!

Look, Adams certainly played a key role as one of the standouts of the Founding Fathers, but he was a lousy chief executive. Today's Republican party clearly take plenty of cues from the original Federalists, and what we've gone through over the last several years is evidence of the old chestnut that those who fail to recall history are doomed to repeat it...

16. Enjoyed it immensely
After The Wire ended, I thought that there wasn't much else of interest on HBO, but I quickly got into John Adams. Giamatti did an excellent job. The series should clean up at the Emmys.

An interesting thought--after the Founding Fathers, I don't know of a single moment in American History where there was a single unifying event which brought forth talented and intelligent individuals like what we got in the late 1700s. No doubt we have had great leaders arise since then, but not out of one singular moment where they all sprung from.

19. The death of Abigail
was one of the most profound moments I ever saw on television. The entire series was superb despite the shuffling of some facts for convenience (Nabby met, married Col. Smith in England, Nabby went to France with Abigail, etc.)

Can we please put Adams on the $50. He deserves it far more than Grant.
Can we please have a prominent monument to both John and Abigail in DC?

I look at our nation now and the principles John Adams fought so hard for. I'm embarrassed.

we gave it away.

I try to think of a quote by Winston Churchill from time to time to keep my spirit alive.

it goes something like this, "Americans will always do the right thing, only after they have exhausted all other options".

I hope...
