An article today on the Op-Ed page of the New York Times is both succinct and ironic. The article - a plea, actually - comes from an organization known as the International Rescue Committee whose members include Morton Abramowitz, George Rupp, John Whitehead, and James Wolfensohn. These men are, respectively, a former president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a former president of Columbia University, a former deputy secretary of state, and a former president of the World Bank.

They describe the people of Iraq as suffering a "grave humanitarian crisis." At least 1.5 million refugees are living in "deplorable" and "declining" conditions in Syria and Jordan. Estimates say at least an equal number have become "internal" refugees in their own country. Given Iraq's population relative to that of the U.S., an equivalent number of displaced American citizens would total nearly 35 million.

The article goes on to declare these refugees "are clustered not in camps but in overcrowded urban neighborhoods, crammed into dark, squalid apartments. Many have been traumatized by extreme violence. Their savings are dwindling; many cannot afford to pay for rent, heat and food; few have proper medical care."

While neatly avoiding the truth of this crisis - that it is solely the result of an illegal, aggressive series of war crimes committed by the leadership of the U.S. and acquiesced to by the American public - the writers agree that, "There is absolutely no denying that the United States has a special responsibility to help. The sectarian violence these Iraqi refugees have fled is a byproduct of the invasion and its chaotic aftermath — yet America has paradoxically done far less than its traditionally generous response."

It was at that point in reading this horrific homage to detachment and denial that I had to pause and take several deep breaths. The thick, disgusting irony of the sorts of comments and observations found in this type op-ed piece, is stupefying in the refusal of its authors to acknowledge that the crimes committed - the war crimes as defined at Nuremberg - were committed by the people leading the U.S.

The passive tone, the urging that things must be done to save the Iraqis, the weirdly detached cri du coeur that attention must be paid to this colossal disruption in the lives of innocent civilians without addressing the crimes committed against them is astonishing. The leadership of the U.S. committed with impunity, and an attitude of complete disdain and contempt for the massive societal disruption and loss of Iraqi life, war crimes that demand adjudication before an international body of jurists. Without such hearings, the rule of law is dead and further articles decrying the plight of Iraqi refugees are irreducibly pointless.
