6. Plant a fucking garden and quit whining. If the US had done more to make the world less dependent
on our food stuffs and coaxed us into being more fuel efficient this situation would not have happened. So take your "oil is the solution" ass out of here.

2. I did a round trip to downtown Houston for $8.25
60 miles.

So I saved enough to buy some St. Arnold's. And polluted about 10% compared to if I had driven.

On my FZR400 Yamaha crotch rocket.. It gets a little over 60 mpg at a steady 70 cruise..

You could have ridden in our HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lane even though you were a single because of our HOV rules.

I want a tiny little Honda (sorry--I do have a Yamaha piano) scooter to get me to the bus depot, but in suburban traffic among the SUV drivers, that is just asking for death (I'm not quite ready).

14. Riding to avoid accidents is a learned skill
I've been riding, a lot of it in dense urban traffic, for forty years and have never been touched by a car.

I would avoid a scooter, IMO they lack the handling capabilities, braking and acceleration necessary for safest riding..

A real motorcycle doesn't cost all that much more and is a far more capable vehicle.

Drop one of those small scooter wheels in a pothole and you are going over the handlebars.. I've actually ridden over a curb at speed on a motorcycle in the dark and not come off.. That would have been a guaranteed crash on a scooter.

I would recommend a Kawasaki Ninja 250 for a beginner, outstanding handling and brakes, enough power to be capable of getting out of the way of traffic, light weight and not enough power to get you into trouble in a second or two like the bigger crotch rockets.

The slightly leaned forward position is actually more comfortable than a cruiser style bike at cruise speed, the wind blast takes the pressure off your hands and wrists.. On a cruiser the wind blast pulls you back and you have to pull yourself forward with your hands and arms.

Good mileage too, probably 60 plus..

9. Been waiting for the price increase for some time. The hops crop failed
so real beers will be more expensive. I don't know if that is driving the corporate beers because we don't even know if they use real hops.

Legalize industrial hemp. It is related to hops and can be a substitute.

12. I just bought a six pack of an excellent local Oregon microbrew for $7.50.
I can't imagine paying fifteen bucks for a four pack.

But if things go on this way, we'll be glad to settle for that white-label generic BEER with the word puzzles under the cap.

13. amazing statistic here
"Hops are grown in America, but in the past three decades the number of farms producing them has declined from 1,100 to just 40."

Looks like people may be heading back to farming, eh? Or is all the land bought up by agribidness still?

17. real interesting article in Der Spiegel
It turns out that it isn't just agribidness that's raking in the profits from the shortages of foods -- the futures market is profiteering by driving up prices in order to profit off transactions. The greed never ends.

20. The "Sideways" effect is wearing off, finally.
I've been into high-end wines for quite some time. At about the time that stupid movie came out, pinot prices from some of the smaller wineries started going through the roof. However, merlot didn't fair too badly.

26. Then you'll love this one:
One of my absolute favorite wines: Orin Swift's "The Prisoner"

The 2006 blends the lush berry flavors of Zinfandel(51%), the power and concentration of Cabernet Sauvignon (23%), the dark black fruit of Syrah (12%), the intensity and structure of Petit Sirah (6%), the flesh of Charbono (6%) and a hint of Grenache (2%) - all combined for a decadent wine with great complexity.

I have a friend who makes beer, wine, ale, mead, coffee brandy, etc. Awesome stuff and you can give it away at holidays!

Edit: not being snarky or anything- just thinking about all the things we are going to have to start making again soon with all the price hikes.

37. And how was I being *in*sensitive?
Beer is pretty much an everyman thing, isn't it?

The article cited the single 14 buck bottle because of its sheer outrageousness. It also mentioned the micorbrews beloved by the masses, and, had you read the article, you'd see it mention beer ordinaire, as well.

But its so much easier to just reach for your Outrage Hat and put it on at a jaunty angle.

The last thing this article was, was a sendup to start a lecture on sensitivity to the poor.

I never cease to be amazed at the stuff that outrages some people.

30. Make your own beer...
I don't drink but most of my uncles and my grandfather are all making their own beer. People in my family think it's quite good And it's been covered it a few times on my local news. Apparently it costs less than $100 to get started.

Of course, as my mom pointed out, making your own beer will only increase taxes as the tax on alcohol won't be giving as much to the state.
