What are some of your post-apocalyptic scenarios? |
|
I was thinking recently that all of these big box Wal-Mart type stores will become massive shelters when people begin to be displaced by massive flooding. I guess they'll eventually be good for something anyway.
I can realistically envision that we will have massive displacement in coastal areas in this country at least in the next 50 years.
It might also be a good time to get into the bicycle selling or horse trading business.
What are some of the things you see for our future?

...who lacks an emergency supply of food, water and other essentials--is really oblivious.
Did we see what happened during Katrina?
If something bad happened in your area, you need to prepare to be on your own.
That's not paranoia. It's just good common sense.
I have children, and I can't imagine being ill-prepared in a disaster, economic crisis or some other catastrophe and having to tell my children, "I'm sorry I'm not prepared, but I didn't want people to think I was some kind of nutjob."

as a former (soon to be again) Houstonian, I've seen my share of natural disasters, tornadoes, hurricanes, tropical storms (which are the worst!), I understand having enough food for a few days, some batteries, flashlights, etc. Heck back in the early 80s Hurricane Alicia knocked out our power and water for a week, but we survived. What I'm talking about is this Red Dawn kind of mentality that seems to have broken out here in the last week or so.
And, to be frank (and I'm several time zones ahead, not working today and had a liquid lunch with a friend), hoarding canned goods and ammo is downright weird, and not necessary. As someone on another thread mentioned about rice, hoarding is contributing to the perception that there's a problem when there isn't.

9. You're one of the few smart ones. |

I can't believe how many seemingly intelligent people actively refuse to consider what they'd do if we had a major interruption in services.
Imagine no electricity, no running water, no stores being stocked, no police, no fire or emergency medical services. 90% of the "intelligent" people wouldn't last 30 days.
It takes so little effort to prepare. It's silly that most people think it's strange.

8. Pessimistic of the intellect and an optimistic of the will |

On my more optimistic days, I'd suggest that some very marginal percentage of our species may still be alive and kicking fifty yrs down the line, but on average, I wouldn't even lend that much credence to the notion.

13. I'm learning every skill/trade/etc. possible |
|
expanding my abilities to fix/build/grow/invent. I'm hording more knowledge than food and supplies. In the middle of packing to move, I'm getting rid of 90% of my fiction (not counting classics) but NONE of my 'research' books. You reminded me, I need to pick up a book on bike repair and refresh my childhood skills. :) I also plan on selling extra produce from the garden and perhaps fresh bread. It's freaking amazing how few people know how to make bread these days, or cook a meal from scratch. Trade will become more common than cash.
