Stupid "rice"panic story
Today my father went to buy groceries at his local Foodlion (ick I know) and on a lark he walked down the isle with rice. He noticed that there was no rice on the shelves. He struck up a conversation with the manager who said that yesterday all of his rice was snatched up by panicked shoppers.

This is what scares me about the "food crisis". People are dumb, dangerous sheep and will do weird radical things as kneejerk reactions to fear. I hope that I have enough food on hand to lock the doors when the crazies start roaming the streets looking for rice and beans.

The grocery store in mention was near Savannah Georgia. Hang on folks the masses have that stupid dangerous look on their faces.

2. They're playing right into the commodities traders hands
Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 05:39 PM by brentspeak
Wouldn't surprise me if some of the major mainstream media's top brass are making sure that "food is disappearing" stories get prime airtime. Heck, the New York Times has several hedge fund traders on its board of directors nowaday ("nowadays", meaning the reign-of-error of Sulzberger Jr.)

10. Just out of curiosity, what the hell is a "hedge fund trader"?
Because if Hedge Funds can be traded, I would sure like to know about it.

4. I wonder if it is a hardwired
response from our primitive past. It wasn't all that many years ago that people raised most of what they needed food wise. The get anything you want at the supermarket lifestyle hasn't been around all that long. I don't know.

5. Ok, really, really, really.. how many Americans are eating rice anyway?
In some cultural food its a tradition... poor or healthier eaters tend to use it too.. Most Americans scarf down on potatoes, meat, fried foods, McDonald crap... They were told about a Rice shortage and all of a sudden you'd think they lived off of it for every single meal.. Most people have it as a supplement 1 a week if that.

13. get off of your ethnocentrism
orientals, hispanics and african americans all eat rice as a part of their diet and they are make up a fairly large segment of the population.

Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 07:10 PM by glowing
how many lbs does an American eat.. yes, some more than other's .. My point is buying up a storm of rice is crazy.. esp if you aren't going to use it and don't know how to store it. my mom in law said store flour, rice, and wheat.. ok where? I have what I need.. but I don't have that capacity. Meat and dairy are going to be really expensive.. by manipulating rice and wheat commodities and creating a drive on them is going to make things worse..

on edit: I'm not nuts.. this is crazy shit.. yes, I have a garden and try to be prepared.. at the same time.. the check out the commodities on this shit.

26. ok, so how many actual lbs do you think you eat per year.. do you think
you need several 20lb bags? I know my boss buys the big bags when they are helping to feed a function with her family or at their temple.. but that is literally feeding a small army.. I think its a bit of hysteria.. kinda like the plastic sheets and duck tape.

29. No idea.
I was simply answering your post. Here's what it said:

"Ok, really, really, really.. how many Americans are eating rice anyway?

They were told about a Rice shortage and all of a sudden you'd think they lived off of it for every single meal.. Most people have it as a supplement 1 a week if that."

I personally don't eat 75% of the shit you said most of us eat. I also cook a good amount of rice for my dogs. So, yeah, this household consumes quite a bit.

Is it hysteria being played by the msm? Oh, absolutely, I don't disagree with you. I also agree with part of your original sentiment, at least as I see it. Some of "America" probably gets a lot of their rice intake in "Krispie" format.

6. What's really sad is that all that rice will end up feeding the bugs
since people who are stupid enough to try to hoard are also too damned stupid to know how to store it correctly for the long haul.

Dumbfuckery is its own reward most of the time, but it has a habit of dragging the rest of us along with it.

19. Quite a lot in the deep south and places
with a significant Asian population like the West Coast.

I eat mine brown and know better than to try to store a big bag of it long term. I don't have freezer space and it goes rancid at room temperature.

22. so, how much is avg. per person in America eating? I don't think it
warrants the rampage that is happening.. and ultimately will end up destroying because they do not store it properly. Stupidity is the American way.. t.v. needs to go out for 1 week.. it would be amazing how much smarter people would be.

How much of this rice will ever be eaten??.....much will go bad and have to be disposed of.
Meanwhile the U.S. can outbid the rest of the world to replace what is purchased......and who goes hungry.
It's embarrassingly stupid..

33. White rice
lasts for years. I store it in cleaned out big Arizona Tea containers and rotate it. Nothing to storing it at all. It is brown rice that goes rancid. I don't expect food prices to go down soon esp since the big commodity players are now into food. It saves me money to buy in bulk and rotate. I have done it for years. I have a huge pantry.

12. There really may be a rice shortage in Asia
It is in part due to crop failures in Thailand and other SE Asian countries. The price of Jasmine rice grown in Thailand has gone from around $3.50 a 4lb bag to $5 for the same bag in a couple of weeks.

Haven't been to Smart & Final recently to check their supplies - they are a restaurant supply warehouse.

Stupid people who think we get all our rice from abroad are the problem. The US grows way more rice than it could ever eat - we export at least half ouf our crop.

17. You might want to read, "The Sheep Look Up"
I read that about a year ago for the first time and it's an excellent book written back in the mid 1970s which was a science fiction then but now, oh boy, it's like all coming true. Food riots and an idiot president. Plus, enviornmentalist who were looked on as terrorist.

Scary book really.

23. You May Not Be Laughing So Hard Later
Check the Commodity prices...they're soaring through the roof and that is going to affect a lot of us in the near future. The crops being planted right now are using $4 a gallon fuel, production and distribution costs are nearly double they were two years ago and consumer "demand" or disposible income has vanished. The "cost analysis" is making people think twice about what to market and what to send to market.

In many ways this country already had a food crisis...when corporate farms began to replace to "mom and pops"...thus putting land in and out of production for overall market profit (similar to oil)...and now is rife with all sorts of speculation. Wanna make a quick couple of bucks? Put down a couple thousand on some October Corn or Wheat...if market shortages don't drive up the price, the soaring oil prices and sinking dollar will.

While I don't see bread lines and food riots coming, I sure do see a lot of downsizing and risidual fall-out from this. I also see a regime that will let us go to hell in a handbasket.

25. Living in a hurricane pron area I always
have on hand one month's supply of food and water. I know it's not needed outside hurricane season but I've started a rotation of my food supplies and it's much easier to keep it going than to buy new at the beginning of every season.

That allows a person to weather these kind of fear buying spells as they come and go. Once there was a rummer about sugar substitute being banned and after that you couldn't find it on the shelves. Strange how things happen.

I probably eat more rice than average, and a 5 lb bag lasts the two of us about 2 months. I wonder if the "Panic" buyers will actually eat this rice, or if they're just reacting to a manufactured fear.
