4. I hope so too..but it wouldn't actually be a race riot because two of the cops were AA
Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 08:29 AM by ScarletSniper
They'd play it as "race" as white vs black, but that's not the case in this case.

It's rage against the system/the machine

8. You are wrong on that from a Black perspective police brutality is a Black/Blue not Black/White. . .
. . .issue.

The race of an officer is irrelevant, many Black folk believe that Black cops can be as racist, if not more so, than white cops. I'm not saying that is right or wrong it comes down to perceived conditioning.

9. It's root and growth is in black vs white..many see the system as white vs black.. and black cops as
Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 08:38 AM by ScarletSniper
part of the corrupt "white police state!" So, when they riot or revolt, it is still against the "white system," even when black cops are involved.

For many, the root of the tree, even if it bears rotten "black" fruit is rooted in "white superiority," not black vs blue. Just my opinion of course.

10. I think we are agreeing but just from different perspectives. . .
. . .wouldn't you agree that many in the Black community ignore the race of the officers and will view police brutality through the prism of race. I believe that belief if rooted in the disproportional amount of police brutality victims who are Black.

As an African American this is something I struggle with. While I don't whole heartedly embrace this I believe it has a lot of merit.

17. The sad thing is I'm very light skinned so I have to demand for folks (Black and white). . .
. . .to recognize that I'm Black. All 4 of my grandparents but my father and his mother are very light skinned so I look mixed. I say that because when issues of race come up white folks give me the old "you are not really Black" treatment, which of course has made me extra militant at times.

Since I started balding and shaved my hair off its become harder and harder. I'm one of those who can spot another racially ambiguous person and see the Black in them from a mile away. . .LOL

20. Well, that's not a problem I have, I'm a nice, toasted honey with cinnamon drops but
one of my sisters got the "throwback" gene lol! We actually did our family tree and found a picture from Gettysburg, Pa of our great-great grandfather who was Irish, even found out his name (McCullough)!

My sister is a bit militant, she feels like she's not seen as black enough..so she delves deeper and go harder. When I was a teenager I called her "Madam X minus Mecca!! lol

21. don't feel too bad. My husband was as dark as night and was mistaken for white more than once
Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 09:09 AM by notadmblnd
No, the people weren't blind. In his medical records his physician wrote that he was a white man. This was a surgeon who opened his chest. It happened with our mortgage too. I left the race portion of our application blank and when we got the papers back he was listed as white. So I guess you could say that just like Stephen Colbert; there's a few people out there that really don't see color. And I think that's a good thing.

12. This is the most middle class Black community in America
Although the shooting happened in the "inner city" of Queens ("downtown Jamaica"), in general southeast Queens is considered the most middle class African American community in the U.S., and Queens county is one of the few in the U.S. where the average income of African American households is higher than the average income of white households.

I live in this area, and riots are pretty far-fetched to me.

. . .that way the media gets Al Sharpton, a potential riot and a heart warming story of how he calmed everyone down.

27. Al Shartpon plays a valuable role in New York
There would be even more of these events if it hadn't been for his efforts over the last two decades.

He's an extremely flawed individual in many ways, but most people outside of New York have little understanding of the civic role he has played.

Ridiculing him or assuming that his role is to stir up trouble or violence is just a right wing talking point.

31. The media loves race wars
And you know whose side the media will take if there are protests. They will say that blacks are behaving like savages, this and that. Journalists are almost all millionaires, after all.
