Concerning the Wesley Snipes sentencing
I agree that tax evasion is wrong and should be punished in some way. Having said that, I am appalled that Snipes gets a 3 yr prison sentence while our good friend Scooter is walking around a free man, after outing a CIA operative.....a treasonable act.

2. it's the old double standard taking place again.
I could think of several who should be sentenced.

4. Not to put too fine a point on it, but
Liby wasn't convicted for "outing a CIA operative." He was convicted for lying and obstructing an investigation.

Just to clarify.

But I think the Snipes penalty was just fine. Pay your taxes, just like everyone else. Being rich and famous doesn't (shouldn't) award you any extra merit or privileges. Three misdemeanors, a year's sentence on each to run consecutively, not concurrently. I'm fine with it.

Moral to the story: Don't be a tax scofflaw.

5. I'm appalled that nothing is being done to stop bu$hco from inflicting more damage both here and
worldwide. I really don't care about Wesley Snipes and the problem he has with federal taxes.

6. I think such non-violent crimes shouldn't be punished with prison sentences.
Assuming greed was at the root of his crime, I think Wesley Snipes should be severely fined. I feel that way about most white-collar and non-violent crimes. Doctors who cheat on Medicare billing should be forced to work at a low salary providing care for the poor, etc. Why should we pay upwards of $30,000 to house and feed Snipes when he could be out working and paying far more in taxes and even more in fines for his past crimes?

11. So the Enron guys should not have been sentenced to prison?
Their's were non-violent crimes, rooted in greed. Fines and probation only?

14. Good question. Such people do push the envelope of my position.
Their theft was so great, there is no way they could ever pay back all that was taken. How about a fine for such people that would keep them in virtual servitude for the rest of their lives? I can think of no worse punishment for such people than having to live openly in society, working for a pittance. Sending them to prison at our expense only to come out and make another questionable fortune doesn't seem satisfactory either.

12. Like I said elsewhere,
It's too bad Wesley wasn't a multinational corporation with an offshore account / tax haven -- those fuckers never pay their fair share to keep things running here.

13. Exactly. Tax evaders on the Snipes scale worry me much less than the megamultinationals whose home
offices are Post Office boxes in the Bahamas.
