Shocked at DU

Im am absolutely SHOCKED by some people on DU.

There are people here who actually 'understand' why someone would use racial slurs.

The longer I stay on DU, the more i feel out of place.

just because people from a certain race do aweful things to you doesnt give you the right to use slurs offensive to an entire race.

bigotry being accepted among liberals, whod have thunk it.

not me.

there is no 'justification' and certainly no 'understanding' to be had by people who would use such filth.

offensive language/posts, please hit the alert button and explain to the mods what you are alerting on and why it is offensive.

they can't monitor everything 24/7 (or so i assume) so it is always a good idea to help them out a bit.

I've been a lurker here for years and a poster for a couple years. There's a ton of bigotry on these boards. Every day I find it in at least one thread.

As an above poster mentioned take the global jewish conspiracy crap for example. Then there's ageism, sexism (yes it's sexist if it's directed at men too), all other manners of racism/bigotry. We are far from being saints here.

Hell, I could join FreeRepublic right now and spew left wing talking points until the cows come home (and scrub myself afterwards since I would feel so dirty just having posted there!!) But it won't make them come around to my point of view. Just saying.

I'm hoping that after the smoke clears, the moderators here will pursue those disruptors that should be at another site and tombstone their asses. They are not representative of us here.

zero torrence to people with other opinions or zero understanding to why some people may hold these opinion (in this case in language usage) is a very liberal idea. Understand or even justification doesn't equal acceptance. You might want to end racism but you certainly won't do it if you don't understand it and why people feel justified to do it.

why people are bigoted. It comes from fear and ignorance. When people finally realize that everyone and everything is interconnected, that what effects one eventually effects all, perhaps these attitudes will change.

I haven't read the mccain thread, but I understand why people use bigoted terms. I don't agree with them using them, and think they are very wrong, but can understand why. And yes, I do hold it against them.

I may understand but do not condone. Does that make sense?

And yes, there are posters who think it is ok to use slurs and they are a problem.
