...fall for obviously fake news stories and disinformation? and even more disturbing, why do so many fall for satire, thinking it's real?

are we guilty of reacting before we read a story completely and try to understand it?

i've gotten so many weird replies to posts i've made because a DUer sees the subject and doesn't bother to even read the post content before responding.

3. maybe you're right
but sometimes it takes so long for the lightbulb to go on for some. i think it's the stress and all the bad news and the obvious coverup of corporate and government crime by the media and the spinning politicians...all this has many of us ready to believe practically anything.

16. Might be because some can't concentrate on DU
I can get online when the phones aren't ringing at work, but have to leave if I get a call, since that's my job. So there are times when I don't take time to properly read an article, or post an answer that, if I had time to edit, would make more sense.

6. absolutely....i never said progressives weren't smart....
...we're far smarter than repubs. but we're starting to react before thinking, and that's always been a trait of the right. i don't want to see us fall into that trap.

4. Maybe its because
of the last 7 years we have come to understand ANYTHING is possible with the criminal cabal and their enablers running the show in Washington. Very little seems too outrageous in these times. Its very difficult to separate satire, and especially fake news from what's real since most of whats being reported as news is so twisted, stretched and convoluted it hardly resembles truth if there was any to start with.

8. yeah, that's kind of what i said in an earlier post in this thread....
...how many times have you seen an onion article and paused for a couple minutes before realizing, "oh wait, that's fake"? and worse than that, how many times have you read a real news story and thought, "hey, this must be the onion"?

without reading the whole post.

7. Well, honestly-- these days our government seems like a satire.
Just to pick one bit at random from this very week-- GW Bush giving a talk about how badly we need to drill in ANWAR... on Earth Day. If I'd read a report like that under any other administration, I'd have assumed it was satire. But it's true.

I'm sure DUers could list about 300 similar moves by the Bush Administration.

14. that's the biggest problem: if your satire is believable it has either happened or will happen
shortly. If it is even 1% beyond what the bushies would do, it seems ridiculous.

17. The border between satire and reality has gotten awfully blurry
in these days of self satirizing right wing zealots. I've doubted a lot of stories of right wing lunacy only to find out later they were true. I've accepted a few stories of mild craziness only to find out they were written as satire.

The degree of sheer insanity is no longer a tipoff to satire. No matter how broad we make it, some right wing freak will exceed our expectations, usually the same day.
