Sadr calls for halt to Iraq fighting

BAGHDAD (AFP) — Iraq's hardline Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Friday called for an end to fighting between the country's security forces and his Mahdi Army militia, a week after he warned of "open war" against the government.

"I call upon my brothers in the army, police and Jaish al-Mahdi (Mahdi Army) to stop the bloodshed," Sadr said in a statement read out at a Baghdad mosque during Friday prayers.

1. And thus his word is apparently the loudest
Because he could probably kill most of our troops with a few words. Bush and Cheney must think this is a dream come true- whenever they need more instability to justify their presence there, they just kidnap a few of Sadr's inner circle for torture and send him the pics.

2. Russia reported Sadr himself was taken into US custody years ago

American armed forces arrested radical Shiite leader Muqtada Al-Sadr, reported the leader's close assistant Hasem Al-Araadge, Chief of Baghdad bureau “Mahdi army”. Al-Arradge was also arrested by the Americans. Both are currently held in the “Palestine” hotel in Baghdad.

3. Now that's interesting
That's on par with what I heard about Bin-Laden getting treatment for his bad kidneys with us shortly before 9/11- did we pick him up to give him his marching orders? You know how we like to have a central figure to be referred to as "the ultimate evil."
