Now that many DUers rushed to send money to Clinton and Obama
how about matching donations to your local food banks?

Food prices are going through the roof, making it harder on many families still struggling with cost of energy and of health insurance (if they have any).

14. Is "dial for dollars" a website?
Or is it something in your local town?

When I donate to Second Harvest, some of that goes to local banks, right?

3. Excellent post!
With all of the enthusiasm (and attendant vitriol) of late, it's nice to see a post that twigs all of us not to forget those who are in need of more than a vote to survive.

5. We do that.
In fact, on Friday, MrSG, through a group where he works, set up a table at one of the grocery stores near where he works, and collected food/money for Northwest Harvest. One person gave a check for $200(!).

He said he had a really good time doing it, but what really got him was all the people who thanked HIM for what he was doing, even as they were handing over checks and food.

He got quite a haul for NH.

6. Each year I've donated 35-40 "bankers boxes" full of food to local food bank.
2007 was different, donations were near zero.
I sold dollar store teddy bears to my subordinates for $5 and made around $800 for the food drive.
It was a lean year for donations and I have 4 subordinates vs. 57 a year ago.
Now I drive twice the distance to work each day (with double gas cost) for half the pay.
Welcome to the bushco "kindler and gentler" pimp hand.

7. Ooooh, I wouldn't be comfortable asking a subordinate
to support a charity for me. Even if it's for a good cause, that puts them in an awkward position when it's their manager they have to say no to.

13. It was kind of cool...
The dollar store had 8 colors and I kept one of each hanging in a 7-foot plant in my office.
They sold themselves and people came from 3 other floors to buy the bears.
We ended up buying the entire stock from 4 different dollar stores and people were still asking for them long after I was tapped out.
Rather than donate cash, we went to a local discount grocery store and converted it to food.

19. Thank you! And, yes, the contrasst is stunning
We have given more than $600 million - my estimate - to all the candidates, of both parties, and a recent report said that an international food organization was short by... $500 million.

11. I just saw a story on my local news this week
about how the food banks are strained and are seeing a huge spike in people needing their assistance. We have several drives a year in my locality, but, being a grad student, I can't do much more than contribute a few canned goods on occasion. Hell, if things get much worse, I'll be a candidate for the bank myself!
