Whatever happened to The Catholic League vs. Minister John Hagee?
The controversy over Hagee's remarks about the Catholic Church seems to have conveniently gone away.

Cornyn: Hagee Is Just Alright With Me

Apr 24, 2008

http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com.nyud.net:8090/archives/2008/04/-sen-john-cornyn-says.html

Sen. John Cornyn says he doesn't think his association with controversial televangelist John Hagee will hurt his reelection chances. "I'm really not concerned that it'll become an issue," he told reporters today in a conference call.

Cornyn was on hand in February in San Antonio when Hagee endorsed John McCain for president. Hagee's a leader of the Christian Zionist movement in the U.S. who says bombing Iran will fulfill biblical prophecy. He's also been accused of being anti-Catholic, which he denies.

McCain has had his problems with conservative evangelicals and actively sought Hagee's endorsement to help fix that. But when some Catholic leaders objected, saying Hagee has called the Roman Catholic church "the great whore of Babylon," McCain put some distance between himself and the San Antonio preacher. McCain said he doesn't agree with all of Hagee's views -- but didn't renounce the endorsement.

Cornyn has long political connections with Hagee dating back to his first race for Texas Supreme Court in 1990. Asked about Hagee today, Cornyn called him "a good man and someone who does an enormous amount of good." As for his comments about Catholics and a U.S. attack on Iran to bring about the end of the world, Cornyn called them "doctrinal differences with other Christian denominations."

"I'm not an expert on that," Cornyn said.
