28. I just checked the $45 emergency menu |
|
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 09:12 PM by WakeMeUp
They are citing 10 lbs. of flour @ $.96 per pound and orange juice at $.88 per can. I'm thinking this is not a new list, but correct me if I'm wrong.
on edit: the flour was listed as $.96 per 5 pound bag, not per pound (oops, sorry!) :silly:

5. Here's my cheap standby, Uses up leftover chicken! |
|
Chicken Pot Pie
Diced leftover chicken apprx 1 c Frozed mixed veggies apprx 1c Can of cream of chicken soup stock or milk apprx 3/4 c season with salt, pepper, oregano, whatever, my family loves this with tarragon.
Mix together and put in baking dish Top with 1 box jiffy cornbread mix mixed per box instructions
Throw in 350 oven for about 45 minutes (or until center is bubbling and cornbread baked thru), cover if needed to keep cornbread from over browning.
Bon Appetit!

31. I have a recipe very similar to that |
|
...except I use a can of low fat cream of celery soup and make the topping with a flour batter. Cornbread topping sounds good, I'll try that.

19. I know you meant well but |
|
I found those recipes unhealthy and not that frugal. Here are a couple of my favorite frugal meals
Chicken Country Captai
6 skinless chicken thighs, bone in 1 medium onion 1 small green pepper 3 tbsp current' 1 can plain stewed tomatoes 1 tsp curry powder 1 tsp sugar brown the chicken in a little oil, remove from pan add dice onion and green pepper, saute until soft add can of tomatoes and currents, salt and ground pepper. Add curry powder and sugar. Put chicken back in pan. Cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes. Serve with white or brown rice.
The above recipe serves four to six for about 7 bucks. You can contol the amount of sodium. It's relatively low fat and doesn't make use of processed foods which are expensive and not good for you.
One more- one of my favorite meals.
take a bunch of root vegetables- potatoes, onions, parsnips, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, whatever. Heat oven to 400. Take a roasting pan and put in a tbsp of butter and 2 of olive oil. Put in oven to melt. Toss peeled cut up veggies in the oil/butter mixture and roast for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes depending on the size of the chunks of vegetables. Salt and pepper to taste when done. Great with a green tossed salad.

I cook them with brown rice, an onion and salt/pepper.
That's become my main dish lately. That and black eyed peas and cornbread.

25. a $3.00 pot of chili... |
|
I like the idea of stocking up on taco sauce at taco bell nad such..why didn't I think of that
DAY 1: Made a $3 (give or take a few cents) pot of chili as such:
1 Lb Ground Turkey (88-cents) 1 Onion, diced (14-cents) 1 Green Pepper, diced (50-cents on sale) 1 Clove Garlic (20-cents) 8 Packets Taco Bell "Hot" Taco Sauce (Free) 8 Containers Taco Time Salsa (Free) 1 Can Tomato Sauce (25-cents) 2 Lbs. Red Beans (75-cents a pound)
Boil your beans in a HUGE pot till nearly falling apart, then drain. Brown the turkey along with the onion and the green pepper, drain and then add all your sauces to coat all the meat. Combine the meat sauce and the bean, stir vigorously.
