What are you going to do with your economic "stimulus" (Tax Rebate)?
Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 06:23 AM by npincus
I'm curious what people will be doing w/their checks... the price of food, gas, and everything it seems has skyrocketed in only the past few weeks. I was going to use the rebate for a small home improvement; now i think it's going in the bank.

Direct deposit rebates start today, checks to follow.

What are your stimulating plans for your stimulus?

1. Several things
One is to save it. Yeah, save it.

Another is to donate to Democratic candidates for Congress, starting with Dennis Kucinich.

3. Giving ours to the local animal shelter.
We've had so many "owner-relinquished" pets arrive at our shelter because of home foreclosures, the shelters are busting at the seams. I see several shelters across the country are suffering the same problem. We are both retired, so our gasoline needs are small. We drive to the market twice a month which is about a 50 mile round trip for us. We also have our own garden so we are able to can food for the winter months. I truly don't see how families with kids are affording their groceries right now. We are also vegetarians so that cuts way down on our food costs, but I see people in my market who are trying to decide between fresh fruits and vegetables and peanut butter and maybe an ice cream treat. It's so sad to see our country headed this way, for no GOOD reason.

10. Nothing that I would ordinarily do. Would pretend I didn't get it.
That way whatever I buy is because I either need it or is part of my plan.

There was a period where I was trying to spend money but didn't find much of anything I really needed. In my situation I can splurge once in a while but don't see the need.

13. Going towards insulating my attic.
The rebate will help pay for itself over the summer (a/c bill, Florida) during which time I'll put the monthly savings in the bank. I'll be saving money, lessening my reliance on electricity, employing a local tradesman and aiding in the comfort of my family and rescue pups.

15. Use it to build a fence in our backyard.
And buy cat-proofing for the top of the fence so that our kittens can go outside safely. Basically we're using evil Bush's bribe to do a little something good in the world (improve the quality of our pets' lives).

16. My stimulus check? Well, it's a toss up-
living in Mass right now really sucks and everything is so damned expensive here ( and I know -probably everywhere else too). I'm tempted to keep it as emergency money the weeks I don't get any overtime to make ends meet.

Or we could finally finish our addition. We need $500 for our electrician and about 700-800 to finish the staircase to get our final inspection. This addition has taken me and my husband 3 and 1/2 yrs to complete. He built it himself and saved us almost $75,000 in labor and supplies. Our house now is twice the size of my old Gram and Gramp's little one bedroom. I wish they were alive today to see what we've done. At least when my Gram passed she knew we were buying it. So most of my money will probably go to the local Home Depot and my electrician.

19. Here's from the Palm Beach Post
What can you buy with $1,200?

President Bush is betting that the stimulus checks will pump life into the economy. A sampling of how far $1,200, the amount a married couple may receive, will go:

Four monthly payments on a $15,000, five-year, 9 percent auto loan.

Nine hours of in-state tuition at the University of Florida, excluding books.

12 fill-ups for a 1999 Ford Expedition.

Almost two-thirds of a 52inch Sony Bravia XBR flat-panel TV.

One month's rent on an average two-bedroom, two-bath apartment in a large Palm Beach County apartment complex (plus one month's bill for basic cable).

Forty-three shares of Wendy's International Inc., or 176 shares of Triarc Cos., the company buying Wendy's, as of Friday.

1,200 Lotto tickets.

For a carpet, might I recommend eBay! I bought (2) handmade, semi-antique, 100% wool persian rugs on eBay- one of them actually cost one dollar more than the FedEx shipping (rug: $46, fedEx: $45). They've got thousands, some really beautiful, great savings!

Are you a delegate?

Take the money from the treasury and give it to your oil company buddies!
