OMG! BUY CHICKEN NOW!!!!!!

I did hear a conversation in the aisle of someone who'd driven 40 miles to Costco to buy rice and (omg) they were OUT UNTIL TOMORROW!!!!! So she came to the local store in our small town to patronize them and buy rice there, even if it cost more.

I bought my limit, cut them up and they are in the freezer since I was taught to buy on sale.

sigh

2. That's what I thought and why they were rationing so 1 person wouldn't clean them out.
OMG! CHICKEN RATIONING!!!

First they rationed the rice, and you were quiet.
Then they rationed the chicken, like the always do for specials, and you were quiet.

When will you speak out? Rationing! OMG!

Myself? I'll keep quiet until pepperoni pizza gets rationed-- then I'll directly instigate mass riots and demonstrations. Chaos. Floods, fire, famine!

Then again, I hate America :evilgrin:

3. As to the Chicken, go back more than once. Take someone with you
go through different checkouts. If the sale is more than one day, go back tomorrow if it's close and doesn't cost too much in gas!

As far as the rice goes, unfortunately that's how people react when they hear about a possible shortage. It was all over the news the last few days that Sams & Costco were limiting rice purchases to 3-20# bags at one time. Do you realize that's 80 POUNDS! Costco will get more on the next truck delivery. My husband works in a supermarket, and any time there's some kind of an announcement, like a snow flurry in the south, or peanut butter, a few customers clean off the shelves!

If I had to guess, on the rice thing, it was most likely a hand full of people who own oriental or latino restaurants and decided they were going to make sure this possible shorrtage didn't affect their business.

4. I know, there is nothing wrong with having these limits, stores do all the time.
Pretty wild though. And I did. I am bad. Now I have enough chicken for several months, and a big pot of backs/wings cooking for soup.

I laaughed when I hear the dimwitt on the news saying Costco was rationing rice, and then said just how much you could buy!

19. Okay, I did some math...
...correct me if I'm wrong...

http://www.producersrice.com/rice/facts.html">Producer's Rice says:
6.5 pounds of uncooked Regular Milled White Long Grain Rice is the same as 1 gallon

And...http://www.producersrice.com/rice/facts.html">Producer's Rice also says:
1 gallon (6.5 lbs) of uncooked Regular Milled White Long Grain Rice will yield 100 1/2 cup servings

We also find that Calculate Me.com says: 16 cups are in 1 gallon. Some quick multiplication, shows us: 100 1/2 cup servings is the same as 50 1 cup servings

Putting that all together, we get...
16 cups (6.5 lbs) of uncooked Regular Milled White Long Grain Rice will yield 50 1 cup servings

With some magic we find:

1 pound of uncooked rice = 2.4615 cups of uncooked rice

and, for every cup of uncooked rice, the yield is 3.125 cups cooked.

With a little magic, we get 7.6922 cups of cooked rice for every pound of uncooked rice.

Multiplying all that by 20 (pounds per ration bag), we get: 384.61 cups of cooked rice for every 20 pound ration bag of uncooked rice.

Each Silverado 2500 Standard Crew Cab with 4 wheel drive, the payload capacity is 3,458 pounds, subtracting the weight of the Average American Family™ (below)
Mommy=100 pounds
Daddy=200 pounds
Junior=94 pounds
Missy=76 pounds

Leaving us with a payload total of 2,988 pounds, or 149.4 ration bags of uncooked rice, or 57,460.7340 cups of cooked rice.

Do not cook rice before loading onto your truck, as the weight will be different.

6. Funny, I spent $130.00 on six weeks worth of frozen meat today....
And not just any meat. 6 King Sirloins. 8 New York Strips. 8 Medalliions. 6 Kansas City style steaks. 6 Salmon Filets. 2 lbs of crab legs. 2 lbs of chicken tenders. The list goes on, I buy it every 4-6 weeks.

Find meat distributors.. It's all packaged frozen for 2-4 weeks before you get it, if kept frozen they are good for a year in a good freezer.

21. When I worked in the supermarket industry...
...we ran out of products all the time. It wasn't because of rationing, it was because either we didn't order enough to meet the demand (usually) or the warehouse/distributor didn't have enough to fill the order.

A store like Costco or Sam's Club (referenced in the original OMG! RICE RATIONING!!! article) usually sells one brand. If their supplier has a problem (manufacturing, distribution, etc) they're usually boned. There is usually a several day to several week lead time to fulfilment of the order that a Costco or Sam's Club would expect to face. Add in more time if you go to a different vendor (ie different brand of rice).

A story like this (stupid, non-issue poorly researched and reported) ends up causing the result. There isn't an overall supply issue with rice. But its reported that there is. So consumers run out and buy more rice than normal. Sudden there is a supply issue because more is selling than was expected to.
