My husband heard a rumor today about a HUGE truckers' strike that is to hit at the
end of the week to protest the high cost of diesel fuel.

I haven't heard a breath of a suggestion of a strike.

Has anyone else heard something like this? Or is someone playing on DH's fears?

3. Yes, I clicked on this right after I posted. He was told it was a strike that would
block the Interstates and gas stations nationwide. I said there was no way that such a coordinated strike could be planned without word leaking out.

7. Was Round 1 April Fools Day? Because I'd heard there was going to be a one day
strike, but then never heard of it happening.

On the other hand, I know a trucker who took that whole week off. He had been ill.

18. Thanks Breeze. I really want to go support the truckers. I
have the time and equipment to report from the scene, sort of like a pool reporter.

I'll go see what's going on over there.

6. The funny thing about these truckers strikes...

...is that even though going 40mph on the freeway is sure to get the most media attention, if they could get enough of them to just drive 60mph, they'd actually slow down traffic nationwide, increase mileage for themselves and for the people backed up behind them, and actually impact the demand for gas and cause an oversupply.

They could save themselves a few bucks, and cost the oil companies a bundle if they could just get enough of them together on it instead of the more "stunt" style ones that only involve a few hundred truckers. Not that the stunts don't make their point, but I think it would be really interesting to see the other way, if it were ever possible to get that many people onboard.

11. Some companies are turning back the
engines on their trucks so that they won't go over 60 or 65. There is one I know of here that has their trucks set so they don't go over 55. It will be happening more and more since it saves the companies money. My SO's company turned back the trucks on the drivers that use the most fuel because of their driving habits to 65.

20. I worded that wrong, not his company but
the company he works for. They didn't turn down his because he sets the cruise control at the speed limit. They went after the one with the lead feet first. Slowed a lot of the other guys down that want to be able to do the speed limit instead of below it.

The down side is having a bunch of slow trucks on the road does create a danger traffic wise. Not all car are going to remain calm about it and many will do dangerous things to get around the trucks.

13. In Italy and France, truckers don't just go on strike. They park their rigs on roads and walk away
In major cities, if U.S. truckers parked their trucks on freeway intersections during rush hour, blocking every freeway lane and walked away for a couple of hours, it might get the attention of the people. It would generate a lot of anger towards them and it might cost them their jobs. But I'll bet a lot of motorists would park their cars and walk away in support of them, too.

21. I have heard that over 44000 independent truckers
have stopped driving in the last two months. Not a strike, they just can't afford the fuel. They aren't able to make a living doing this any more.

Its time to take drastic measures.

22. Does anyone understand why diesel went from the cheapest fuel to the most expensive
in the last few years? Diesel used to be the cheap fuel, cheaper than the lowest regular gas. But in the last few years it's surpassed even the highest cost of premium. Anyone understand why? Is it just the decision of the refiners to make less and control the price?
