Bill Would Ban Adult Mags From Bases

Washington - Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., has introduced a bill to prohibit the sale of "sexually explicit" material at military installations.

"Our troops should not see their honor sullied so that the moguls behind magazines like Playboy and Penthouse can profit," Broun said in a statement.

Broun said his bill, titled "The Military Honor and Decency Act," is needed to close a loophole in current law that allows the sale and rental of sexually explicit material on military bases both in the United States and abroad.

"Allowing the sale of pornography on military bases has harmed military men and women by escalating the number of violent, sexual crimes; feeding a base addiction; eroding the family as the primary building block of society; and denigrating the moral standing of our troops both here and abroad," said Broun, a physician and former Marine reservist.

His bill would require the Department of Defense to review material not now deemed sexually explicit under the "National Defense Authorization Act of 1997" to see if it should be banned from sale on military installations.

Not using the military to distribute material that degrades women and eroticizes violence against them is necessary, given the problems in the military.

Tying it in with "honor" and "moral standing" confuses religion and the "sex-is-bad" folks with those who don't think government property should be used to fuel exploitation of women and violence against them.

Their hatred of specific groups is well-defined. You're assuming all porn is antagonistic toward women. It's not.
Sexuality itself requires some objectifying of the subject -- it happens in women's porn, too. Also, a lot of women
participate in powerplay in sexuality -- is a dominatrix anti-male? These are complex issues that require careful,
rational assessment not polemic based on emotion.

It's because magazines like HUSLTER publish articles that counter the Administrations' 'War on Terror', the illegal War of Aggression in Iraq, and other anti-democratic policies.

They want to 'protect' the troops from exposure to this potentially divisive literature.

If they were to ban specific magazines, that would immediately raise a cry of censorship, This way, they can use the cover of banning pornography to affect their intended goal.
