Todays Dog & Pony show brought back fond memories of one of Bush's most beloved and often uttered & moving phrases "We're making good progress" Here are just some of those moments in history:
March 26, 2003, About Iraq: "Our military is making good progress in Iraq, yet this war is far from over" Bush said. "As they approach Baghdad, our fighting units are facing the most desperate elements of a doomed regime. We cannot know the duration of this war, but we are prepared for the battle ahead." President Bush said in a address to hundreds of uniformed military personnel at MacDill Air Base in Tampa, Florida.
Aug. 8, 2003, About Iraq: One hundred days after major combat ended, the United States and coalition partners are making "good progress" in Iraq, President Bush said. But, he acknowledged, "We've got a lot more work to do." Accompanied by Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld during a press conference at his Crawford, Texas, ranch, the president cited improvements in security, democratic processes and the economy as signs of progress in Iraq. In many cases, he said, infrastructure is up to pre-war conditions, which he called "satisfactory" but not "the ultimate aim."
October 2003: "And, listen, we're making good progress in Iraq. Sometimes it's hard to tell it when you listen to the filter. We're making good progress. I had a -- Bernie Kerik came in the other day and he described to me what it was like to set up a police force in Baghdad right after our successful efforts there. I was really impressed. I was impressed by his work; I was impressed by the spirit of the Iraqi citizens desirous to start taking care of business on their own."
August 23, 2005: "I'll remind the people that we're making progress on two fronts -- a political front. The Iraqi people are working hard to reach a consensus on their constitution."
September 25, 2005, About Hurricane Katrina: I know the people of this part of the world are suffering. And I want them to know that there's a flow of progress. We're making progress. ..... And we went there to inspect progress being done, and the people of New Orleans have got to understand there's a lot of people working hard. And they're making good progress.
January 5, 2006, About Iraq: The president then offered a quick summation of his strategy in Iraq that, while not getting into detail, appeared unchanged.
"On the one hand, we will work to have a political process that says to all Iraqis, the future belongs to you. On the other hand, we'll continue to work on the security situation there," Bush said. "We're making darn good progress."
December 28, 2006, About Iraq: President Bush emerged from the meeting and spoke in positive terms.
"We are making good progress toward coming up with a plan that we think will help us achieve our objective," he said.
That objective, stated by the president on numerous occasions, is an Iraq that can sustain, defend and govern itself. The White House says the president is studying a number of options, including a possible increase in U.S. troop levels.
March 21, 2006: "We're making progress because of -- we've got a strategy for victory, and we're making progress because the men and women of the United States military are showing magnificent courage and they're making important sacrifices that have brought Iraq to an historic moment -- the opportunity to build a democracy that reflects its country's diversity, that serves its people, and is an active partner in the fight against the terrorists."
April 4, 2007: "So while we're making progress, it also is tough. And so the way to deal with it is to stay on the offense, is to help these Iraqis."
April 29, 2008 (today about Afghanistan): "I will tell you now that we're making progress in Afghanistan, but there is tough fighting. I am under no illusions this is not tough, I know we are dealing with a determined enemy," Bush said. Three people were killed when militants opened fire on Afghan leaders and international representatives who were attending a military parade in Kabul on Sunday. The Taliban, who have launched counter-attacks on the U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, claimed responsibility for the attack that also injured about 10 people.
