33. That's not the issue, really |
|
It's a global market. If the global supply increases, the global price (should) decline. It would probably stay here, just because we're closer, but it would make us import a little less oil from overseas.

36. Bull shit, gas prices are rigged. Look off the coast of Santa Barbara, what do you see? |
|
Look all around here, there are oil wells, and yes refineries and gas is over $4.00 a gal. It doesn't have anything to do with wear it oil is pumped.

37. Oh, the gas prices are rigged, no doubt about it |
|
The futures markets on refined and crude petroleum products is insane, and probably riddled with insider trading.
But regardless, those oil wells in SB are pumping oil into the global market. So are the refined products, which explains the universally high prices.

I may be wrong, but I thought the oil companies had already been given the leases to ANWAR, but still did not want to drill there because it would not be profitable to them. Do oil companies actually have the leases to ANWAR?

the scarcer the resource becomes, the greater the price, the greater the public panic, the greater the political pressure, the more enticing the resource. i often think we'd be best just drilling it & getting it over with, thereby removing the issue from our national energy "debate".
ANWR, no matter how great its value to the planet as an intact ecosystem, is an abstraction to 99.99% of americans. they'll never go there, & they'll never understand saving tundra & reindeer when they're waiting in line for their gas ration. it's going to represent a delusional "solution" to high gas prices, and a wedge issue for the GOP, until it's value is debunked.

so it would put pressure on Americans to drill in Anwar? Must be my cynical mind at work but I can just see the back room boyz saying "let's raise the price of gas so high, they'll beg us to drill there"!
Nah, those oil boyz aren't that smart are they?

27. The dumbest solution seems to be the prevailing one if we look at history. |
|
Wasting resources drilling in ANWR or funding solar/wind and other alternative energy sources? Hmm, we'll take the half-assed approach and drill ANWR.
If it took 5 billion dollars to install solar panels on 5% of homes in America and 1 billion dollars to open up ANWR to support 5% of domestic consumption for only 12 yrs., the miser would rather rip open ANWR.
It's fucking looney toons.

21. My tone was meant to supply sarcasm; the poll asks a fair question |
|
..although I suspect I know the answer I'll get.
There are about 5 ways I can think of to save more oil than the ANWAR will yield. Hybrid car tax breaks, wind farm tax breaks, solar cell tax breaks, subsidized high efficiency bulbs, and and incentives for shipping more truck loads on intermodal rail flats leap to mind. I'd support building nuclear power plants before I supported drilling in the ANWAR, but that's me.

The cost of drilling ANWR (and I don't mean just the money needed to dig a hole, but the long term damage to the ecosystem) is far too high for such a relatively small amount of oil.

19. ANWR oil is BUNKER OIL |
|
meaning it's a high sulfur crude oil that US refineries can't handle. It will be shipped to Asia.
Drilling in ANWR benefits the people who have what used to be our jobs.
It sure as hell won't benefit US.

31. How about drilling more in the Gulf instead? |
|
The Gulf of Mexico, I mean.
I understand there are several large fields that are currently off-limits. Why not open those up a little? We already have the drilling rigs, and the ocean is a lot tougher than ANWAR, isn't it?
Besides, it's easier to contain an ocean spill than an Artic land spill.

More oil is not the path to success.
Smarter, more responsible growth - measured not by profit but by improved quality of life - is the answer, when people keep talking about drilling in ANWAR or the recently talked about fields found off the coasts of Brazil they are just avoiding the core issue, the hard problems that we need to solve if we want to continue as a human society with a fair quality of life.
