We are running out of oil. Yet the demand for it continues to grow. Demand is higher than supply. Therefore, prices go up.
This is Econ 101. HOw would nationalizing oil companies solve anything. Reduce demand or increase supply. Those are the only two options.

the government would use more of the profit/revenue from sales to fund alternative energy sources.
they arent going to switch on their own.

Government operations are not intended to make a profit. It should be a break even proposition.
