Alot of people in the US have a very simplistic 'mommy can do no wrong' attitude towards America. You have to pander to the dumbest, most reactionary americans to be safe in politics. At least Ron Paul had the courage to be halfway intelligent about terrorism, but he was criticized heavily for that.
However I don't think 9/11 was due to our support of dictators. We have supported dictators and terrorists, but the real motivation is mostly xenophobia by muslims in the mideast who fear a western invasion. Its not the same thing as supporting the contras who then go out and kill civilians, which probably has nothing to do with islamic terror.
