Mark Crispin Miller: From Don Siegelman - "I Am Now Considered A 'Special Offender'"
From: Don Siegelman

I was told today by the Probation Office that I am now considered a " Special Offender."

The definition I was given reads as follows:

"Individuals identified or associated with traditional or non-traditional organized crime such as the Mafia, outlaw motorcycle gangs, Asian gangs, prison gangs, etc.,persons identified as potential terrorists, kidnappers, members of a supremacy group, major bookmakers, major drug or weapon traffickers, pronographers, sex offenders, armed bank robbers, offenders of high notoriety, or cases similar nature."

This basically means I can't travel out of Birmingham or Montgomery without a lotof red tape, and long delays. For example to travel in some places requires at least 30 days advance approval.

Why now after my trip to the House Judiciary Committee, my appearance on 60 MINUTES, Tavis Smiley and on the MSNBC-Dan Abrams Show ?????

Siegelman hit with travel restrictions

4/29/2008, 5:49 p.m. ET

The Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman has been barred from traveling without getting prior approval. Siegelman tells The Associated Press that he was informed by his probation officer Tuesday afternoon that he was being classified as a special offender for travel purposes. The classification means he must get approval from the judge overseeing his case and from the district where he seeks to travel. The Democrat was sentenced to more than seven years in prison on corruption charges and was recently released pending his appeal.

3. That is such a simple question. Why is he now a special
offender? Is is because he is a special witness?

6. I have said this before and I will say it again, if they can do this to
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 07:29 PM by brandnewlaptop
Gov Siegelman, they can do it to any Democrat.

The probation officer immediately needs to be questioned as to why this was applied to Gov Siegelman, and who gave him "the order".

Is there anyway we can find out the name of the probation officer, is this public record? And are these type of restrictions normally applied to other persons out on appeal for similar type offenses.?

7. Who will question him? The republican attorney, the republican attorney general?
George Bush has packed the Supreme Court. Is that another reason to make sure McCain isn't elected?
