Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates botannical link to the far east
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 08:12 PM by sharesunited
The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC commemorates the gift of two cherry trees from the Mayor of Tokyo to the United States in 1912.

Other similar cherry trees have been planted since then to create what is now a cherry tree festival in parts of Washington at this time of year, every year, in tribute to their peak blossoms according to the change to spring season at the District's global latitude.

Does anyone know if Washington and Tokyo are at approximately the same latitude? I was able to find the coordinates of Tokyo easily online, but the coordinates of Washington have been thoroughly scrubbed.

2. To the naked eye viewing a map, Oregon is north of DC, yes?

So do we have varietals springing forth with this gift over a band of latitudes?

Makes sense in a natural world perspective.

3. According to Google Earth,
the Washington Monument is at 38 degrees/53 minutes/22 seconds north and 77 degrees/2 minutes/7 seconds west.

The Imperial Palace in Tokyo is at 35 degrees/40 minutes/57 seconds north and 139 degrees/45 minutes/10 seconds east.

I'd call that close enough for government work.
