So, it turns out Al got bad legal and accounting advice, and had to pay $70K in back tax and $25K in fines for not carrying work comp.
It's not just that I like Al that pisses me here -- there are two 2002 electees I hate more than root canal -- Norm Coleman and Saxby Chamblis. Al should have beaten Coleman in a walk -- this will be tough to explain to voters.

the way I see it
NY has a horrid reputation for workers' comp laws. Its a mess there.
And the speeches? Really. He paid the taxes only he paid them in the wrong state.
How is that a big deal?

11. "Democrat Al Franken wants to roll back President Bush's tax cuts .. |
|
... but won't pay his own taxes." I can hear it in the ads now.
Seriously -- I hope you're right. I think his honest approach (I got bad accounting advice, but I take full responsibility) may save him -- and Minnesotans are pretty smart, and (I hope) are getting fed up with Pawlenty & Coleman.

Make documents public.
Ask for questions.
Answer every question.
And then say, isn't this enough?
End it before summer, so when the GOP bring it up again in the fall, ask them why they need to bring it up again?
Hasn't this election had enough distractions?
Point out that he made the documents public, answered all the questions.
Then tell them again, isn't this enough?
And repeat it over and over.
The documents were made public, all questions were answered, isn't this enough? Hasn't this election had enough distractions?

6. Well, speaking as a Minnesotan, I never wanted Franken as a candidate in the first place. |
|
And I resented the hell out of the fact that this New York carpetbagger was being shoved down my throat.
My fondest wish is that he crashes and burns a.s.a.p. so that Nelson-Pallmeyer might have a chance.

16. Al grew up in Minnesota |
|
That's why he came back. He cares about the state. He cares about getting rid of Coleman. Why is that wrong? New York gave him a career, and a platform with which to fight the Rethuglicans, now he's using that celebrity to try and make a difference for Minnesota, not New York. Why do you have a problem with that??

As to your comment: whatever. I merely stated my personal opinion as a Minnesotan. I'm not concerned with whether you agree with it or not.

I wonder why an administrative problem such as this pops up when it does. I've never heard of a Republican having an embarrassing tax problem in the middle of a campaign. Maybe an embarrassing incident in a bathroom stall or a motel room, but never a tax problem.

Al Franken can't find a decent attorney or a lawyer? Give me a break. That is hard to explain.

9. What are the odds that someone as smart as Al Franken, who |
|
makes a career out of tweaking the Right Wing/Neo-Cons, who certainly has studied them and their tactics as well as anyone else you can name, would deliberately leave himself open for prosecution on tax fraud?
