You just have to wonder how the writers for TDS and Colbert can possibly keep up with this guy.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080430/ap_on_el_pr/mccain

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Republican John McCain said Wednesday that the bridge collapse in Minnesota that killed 13 people last year would not have happened if Congress had not wasted so much money on pork-barrel spending....

"The bridge in Minneapolis didn't collapse because there wasn't enough money," McCain told reporters while campaigning in Pennsylvania. "The bridge in Minneapolis collapsed because so much money was spent on wasteful, unnecessary pork-barrel projects."...

McCain also criticized earmarks for projects in New Orleans that didn't help protect the city from Hurricane Katrina, saying a congressional earmark helped to dig a channel outside New Orleans that helped speed the hurricane into the city.

Let's see. Were there any congressional earmarks involved in the building of the World Trade Center? Or Logan Airport? 'Cause then he could blame 9/11 on pork, too! :sarcasm:

1. He is framing the debate on his gas tax idea
Eliminate the gas tax and we may see more bridges collapse, so he is just framing the issue before Obama and the dems do.

McCain's 5+ trillion in tax cuts, the majority of which go to the wealthy & corporations, will proooooooobably play a role in crumbling infrastructure. Earmarks run about $30-50 billion/year which is a small fraction (maybe 10%) of Bush's tax cuts and the Iraq war.

Not all earmarks are wasteful, I don't know why some people assume that. They go to programs, science or infrastructure in a person's district. It isn't necessarily wasteful.

4. the bridge went down because the Rethuglican Governor set back the inspections so the work would
start after the elections.. for 2 reason

1] he didn't want to raise taxes for the bridge before the election

2] he didn't want work being done during the election, because there would be slowdowns on the bridge and the inconvenience might reflect on his campaign

negligent homicide... murder
