About the "Gitmo suicide bomber". . .
Today it was confirmed that a suicide bomber who blew up in Mosul was released from Gitmo in 2005.

Joe Scabrous has already intimated that we should have killed him when we had the chance, instead of worrying about HIS civil rights. . I expect that the RW noise machine will amplify this sentiment over the next couple of days.

Here's what I wonder.

If we had spent his time with us "bringing him around" instead of torturing him, do you think he might have behaved differently when he got out?

If we HAD a legitimate case against him (i.e. if he wasn't part of a revenge round-up or something) our case against him would have been crippled by his treatment as an "enemy combatant" without the basic human rights of habeas corpus etc.

1. Why take their word for this in the first place?
How do we know this story is true? Maybe it was a setup, a bomb car. The evil of Gitmo and its architects is so deep, I personally find this more believable. Gitmo is a charade, start to finish. It was set up as though to say, 'See, the world is so dangerous, we had to go around the world collecting bad guys and keep them in cages. Just to protect you". But actually, the inmates were paid for by the head -- so warlords, neighbors, etc. turned in farmers, taxi drivers and enemies just for the reward. Evidence was not required. The torture is just an added step to the charade. 'See, these people are so dangerous we have to torture them, just for your safety -- just like in 24'. So in this case the torture isn't even honest, just part of the theatrics. There are probably some "high value" inmates but the vast majority who have been released were not even jailed in their home countries (released after 5-6 years of no due process or representation). What does that tell you?

2. it's not too difficult for me to believe that we turned him into one...
There's no reason for me to believe that he was a terrorist prior to incarceration.

Yet knowing even a little bit of what type of disciplinary measures have been used there, it's not too difficult for me to believe that we turned him into one...
