If you want to sabotage Democrats in November, this is all you need to know. You will share the responsibility for it.

Let's say McCain is elected, and bench turnover ensues. How long would it take, in your expert opinion, for Roe to be overturned? I mean, surely there are people planning for this!

I don't think the current Court will overturn Roe. Since Kennedy wrote much of Casey in 1992, I don't think he will simply walk away from it. But it will not take long if there is another Republican appointee. A state will pass a total abortion ban, and it will be challenged. That case will maybe take a year to get to the Court — which will, I think, uphold such a law.

1. Unfortunately
that isn't a good enough reason for some Hillary supporters to vote for Obama. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

2. There were plenty of Obama supporters saying the same thing
That they would never vote for Hillary. I have bringing up the Court as an overriding reason to vote for whom ever wins the nomination for months, only to be ridiculed by BOTH sides' supporters.

3. Such a move will start the second civil war
It will force everyone to choose sides in a argument with no simple right answer. I do not want to see the turmoil that will ensue.

8. I've about come to the point where I think a second civil war might be a *good* thing..
Seriously, this country is headed down the tubes unless there are some major changes made and I've been watching politics long enough to have become extremely skeptical that our political system is capable of making those changes.

4. In order for this to happen,
A democratically controlled Senate will have to be willing accomplices in the endevor. They are the ones that will approve whom ever the President nominates to the court.

5. They will do what they're told -- if history is any guide
The GOP will nominate a certifiably crazy right-winger -- think someone like Alan Keyes. The Dems and the blogoshpere will go apeshit. Everyone will kick and scream and holler. Then, the GOP will admit "defeat" and nominate someone who is only slightly to the right of Clarence Thomas. Everyone will breathe a sigh of relief, the Dems will shoo him on through the nomination process, and run around patting themselves on the back for keeping the wacko guy (who the GOP never wanted anyway) off the bench. They've done it before and it works.

7. Then I suppose it is pointless
to bother working for or electing Democrats to any position. Throw in the towel, throw up our hands and admit defeat before the fight has started.

9. One doesn't follow from the other -- but if you want to, go ahead
I'm just pointing out how this works. This is, after all, how we got Alito. Bush nominated a patently absurd candidate, then when she withdrew, Alito sailed on through.

The most dangerous thing is to maintain illusions about how the system works.

6. There's a good reason...
...to push the button with the (D) next to it, regardless of who the candidate is. Hold your nose if you need to but the US cannot survive a neocon dominated SCOTUS for very long.
