AUSTIN, Texas — Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's mother, maverick Texas politician Carole Strayhorn, says she's proud of her son for writing his book that is sharply critical of President Bush and his administration.

"He's not disgruntled. He was disappointed," Strayhorn told The Associated Press on Thursday. "When you think you've been told the truth and find out years later you weren't ... He has great admiration for President Bush but it went terribly off track."

Strayhorn has been involved in Texas politics for several decades at local and statewide levels, running for office as a Democrat, Republican and as an independent. She served as the state's Republican Comptroller from 1999-2007 and ran for governor as an independent in 2006...

...McClellan shared some of the chapters with his mother as he wrote the book, she said.

"He labored on it a long time," she said. "He told me straight up, 'I have a responsibility to the American people to tell them the truth, to tell them what happened and where it went terribly off track. To do so, you can make America better.'"
