Poll question: Is Sharon Stone like Jerry Falwell? |
|
Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 11:19 AM by ccharles000
I am not comparing all aspects of their lives I am sure she is not a major bigot. Her china comment made me think of what jerry said about 911.
Sharon-"I'm not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else,"..."And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?"
Jerry-"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

1. Not even close. Stone is a second-rate actress with no following. |
|
Falwell is an immensely popular religious figure.
I don't even see where the comparison comes from.

9. The question was mostly referring to their comments. |
|
They both blamed events that killed many on action of others (she blamed the Chinese gov and its treatment of Tibetans, and he blamed 911 on gays and others).

12. I understand that part. |
|
The comments are similar, but the commenters bear no resemblance to each other in any way.

13. But by saying "...of the Left" you are implying that both spoke for |
|
a group of people who share a common ideology.
Falwell most certainly did and was actually telling his flock (literally) what to believe.
Stone was speaking strictly for herself.

2. Ridiculous analogy. She's an individual. Falwell spoke for |
|

a well-organized, activist group of people.
BIG difference.

7. No, because she's not the leader of a religious movement. |
|
She could indeed be described as the left-wing equivalent of a Christian-Rightie, but not of Falwell himself.

8. No she's not, but it WAS a decidedly "Falwellesque" statement. |

Yeah, I cringed when I heard it.

11. Oh joy. I put up a link pointing out that some Chinese would agree with her. |

Boy did I get yelled at!
You gotta watch out for those rabid anti-fundamentalism fundamentalists. They're a force.

16. No. She at least immediately apologized. |
|
She clearly wasn't wishing pain and suffering on China. She just mentioned out loud that she wondered if it was karma. Hardly anything wrong with thinking that. The only mistake she made was sharing her thoughts with the media.
