"The Assault on Reason" by Al Gore. He has incredible writing skills (rare these days). His discussions on issues like civil liberties and how fear has gotten us into the mess we're in right now are lucid and well thought out. Be prepared to be enlightened, inspired and angry all over again that this man has not been our president for the last eight years, as he should have been. Here is just a small sample:
"Having replaced the divine right of kings with the divine rights of individuals, our Founders overthrew the monarchy and designed a self-government according to the strictures of reason. And they took special care to insulate the ongoing deliverations of democracy against the recombination of fear and dogma, by guarding against any effort by government to establish in law any trace of divine justification for the exercise of power."
"They were also keenly aware of the thin and permeable boundary between religious fervor and power-seeking political agendas. 'A religious sect may degenerate into a political faction,' wrote James Madison, but the new American nation would nevertheless be protected against the ungovernable combination of religious fervor and political power as long and the Constitution prohibited the federal government from establishing any particular creed as preeminent."
Nausea prevents me from even thinking about how different this country would be right now if not for the theft of the election of 2000. :banghead:

2. I have to put it back on the top of the to-read stack. |

It's been sitting around the house a while. I remember reading the first few pages and thinking 'this is going to be GOOD' but something pushed it aside.

it is one of those books that you want to read in depth to take it all in, but alas, life is too stressful! His intelligence just shines in this book; he captures the essence of many of our country's problems.
