Raytheon's Pain Ray: Coming to a Protest Near You?
Raytheon's Pain Ray: Coming to a Protest Near You?
By Michael Dickinson
CounterPunch
May 29, 2008

Coming soon, from the folks who brought you the microwave -- Raytheon! After more than ten years in the making and at a cost of over 40 million dollars, 'Silent Guardian', or Active Denial System, (ADS, in it's formal mood), is almost ready for public release!

...

For, Raytheon -- the world's largest producer of guided missiles, and fifth largest defense contractor in the world, provider of aircraft radar systems, weapons sights and targeting systems, communication and battle-management systems, and satellite components -- has come up with a system which could scatter a crowd in a trice without a drop of blood being spilled.

...

Transmitted at the speed of light over a 700 yard distance, the Pain Ray is a millimeter-wave beam that penetrates 1/64th of an inch beneath the skin, causing the water molecules there to bubble, producing an intense burning sensation, said to feel like being burnt by molten lava or a hot iron. Its delivery system attached to a Humvee and aimed right, the Pain Ray makes people run away -- fast.

...

"But what happens if the people faced with such a weapon can't just run away? What happens if they're trapped in a crowd, and the crowd can't move? How much pain must that crowd endure? How long can any member of the crowd be exposed to that weapon before his or her skin -- or their eyes -- simply cook off? What happens if the devices are used deliberately in a manner designed to cause maximum harm -- say, by training the device on prisoners trapped in prison cells until they literally go mad with pain? What happens if the system operator turns up the power? A little bit works well, why not try a lot? What happens if the scientists didn't test the devices thoroughly, and they turn out to render anyone touched by them blind, or impotent, or sterile?"

...

8. It can be shielded with a Faraday Cage...
...per Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Denial_System : "Electromagnetic radiation cannot pass through a conductor, so the effect can be shielded by a a conductive mesh or foil which forms a Faraday cage around the target."

So we need to figure out a lightweight and inexpensive wearable Faraday shield. My first thought was Mylar since it is reflective, but I'm not sure now if Mylar would be effective? In any event, obviously in the future people planning to demonstrate will need a means to counteract this barbaric weapon.

Yes, it is barbaric. Reports of people being hospitalized with 2nd degree burns, if exposed for longer periods of time. And if you don't think operators will have "fun" by prolonging the beams -- well you haven't read much 20th century history, then, have you?

Scary stuff.

17. It didn't work and it went right through a door and a metal trash can...
the guy i saw demonstrating it used a lot of items to try and beat it and he got zapped on all, including a mattress.

18. Was that on the 60 Minutes report?
He was able to use the mattress for a longer period, but the ray still got to his feet and fingers. It's just impractical carrying a mattress to a demonstration.

4. When are we going to grow out of this depraved childhood, with all these
bestial little Bushites running around pulling wings off of flies and blowing up frogs, and figuring out how to fry peoples' eyeballs, and getting their jollies off drowning people and running prison ships?

I was going to say that "we have become a disgusting nation." But it's just a few, totally disgusting, perverted little bully boys and their ugly-ass girlfriends. How did we let this happen--the most hateful children in class ending up in charge? It's time to take the boogers down. Come on, gang! We can do it! We are the SOVEREIGN PEOPLE OF THIS LAND. We don't like Raytheon and its nasty little pain engineers?--we can pull their corporate charter, dismantle them and seize their assets for the common good. What the hell are we putting up with this for?

Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 05:07 AM by SpiralHawk
about cell phones and wi fi that electronic energy waves don't and can't have any negative impact on human beings. What the hell, they say, it's only energy; people who complain about it are psychotic. Um hmmmm.

6. when they demonstrated this for 60 minutes, the targets were Peace protestors
military volunteers holding signs saying "peace not war" and other cliched things that AMERICAN CITIZENS might carry at a demonstration.

and the thug police would know your intentions and try to kill you.Your self defense might get you shot.
Psychopaths are the kind of people that like using these beams on protesters.

13. Has anyone else noticed the timing of these stories
:tinfoilhat: :D they always march out the latest crowd control device when things start to get a little 'spicy'?? Propaganda is becoming ineffectual so time for plan B.
I read somewhere that some animals suffered retina damage from this energy, so probably also good to think of some eye protection.

14. there has to be ways to deflect those beams
Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 10:51 PM by undergroundpanther
The pain beam does fuck up and fry people.

More people need to understood why protesters need to form protection for protesters from the brutality and technology of police. The protesters faced with the pain beams would be wise to get the technology to be safe.If it is not sold to the public some people could be ready in a protest to take armor and devices from downed thugs and leave ASAP, Or find people they trust to take it so the police can't get it back.Go reverse engineer it later and make it available for protesters..

On the other hand...If people try to deflect beams in obvious ways like foiled suits, then the fascists will kill them because they know what their intentions are...
